[10] Denver Falls in Close Battle with [9] Maryland

The Pioneers held the Terrapins scoreless in the final frame but were unable to overcome a three-goal deficit

DENVER - The [10] University of Denver women's lacrosse team fell to the [9] Maryland Terrapins on Saturday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

Julia Gilbert led the Pioneers with four goals as Denver's only multi-goal scorer in the game. Olivia Penoyer, Jane Earley, Caroline Colimore and Sloane Kipp also tallied goals in the contest.

Bryn McCaughey led the defensive effort with four caused turnovers while Anna Palmisano, Sam Thacker and Megan Klingenberg all earned a pair each. Abby Jenkins led the Pioneers in the circle with three draw controls. Goalkeeper Emelia Bohi made seven saves in net.

Earley struck first off an assist from Penoyer, but Maryland responded with three unanswered goals, a deficit the Pioneers were unable to overcome. Penoyer earned her second helper of the game on a feed to Colimore, spinning in from behind the 12 meter arc to score.

Gilbert and Penoyer made up a two-woman team once again to score back-to-back goals just 12 seconds a part with under two minutes to play in the first half to make it a one goal game. It looked like the Pioneers were going to score the equalizer on a goal in transition, but Maryland picked up the rebound off the post to take a 7-5 lead into halftime.

The Virginia native opened the scoring for Denver in the third quarter to once again make it a one score game, but three unanswered goals by the Terrapins was too large a deficit to overcome.

Denver held Maryland scoreless in the final frame, but late cards for the Pioneers kept the lead out of reach.

The Terrapins were led offensively by Victoria Hensh's hat trick. The reigning NCAA goalkeeper of the year Emily Sterling made a tremendous showing in goal with 10 saves.

DU moves to 3-2 to start the season.

UP NEXT: The Pioneers take a two-game roadtrip for battles against [3] Northwestern and [11] Stony Brook.
