No. 53 DU Women’s Tennis Sweeps North Dakota

Denver moves to 4-0 in Summit League Play with 7-0 win on Saturday

DENVER – The No. 53-ranked University of Denver women's tennis team (12-6, 4-0 Summit) earned its second 7-0 sweep in Summit League play with a win against North Dakota outside at Denver Tennis Park on Saturday.

North Dakota was only able to play with four student-athletes, giving DU walkover wins at No. 3 doubles and Nos. 5 and 6 singles.

Doubles:
Denver moved halfway to the doubles point before play began when UND was unable to field a third team, giving the No. 3 match to DU. Denver's No. 1 team of sophomores Caroline Driscoll and Louise Wikander sealed the point in DU's favor after dropping just one game in the No. 1 match, racing out to a 4-0 lead before UND held for the only time.

In No. 2 doubles, sophomores Alice Otis and Claudia Martinez de Velasco also held a dominant 5-2 lead when the match was abandoned.

Singles:
DU claimed the first two singles points by walkovers at Nos. 5 and 6 singles with North Dakota not having enough players available.

For the second time this season, Driscoll dropped no more than one game in a singles match, winning 6-1 6-0 in just her second-career appearance at No. 2 singles. She dropped the match's opening game on serve but answered by winning the next 12 games to clinch the dual for Denver.

Otis won her seventh singles match in straight sets of the season after moving up to the No. 4 slot. After taking a 3-0 lead in the first set, she gave one break back before retaking a two-break lead at 5-3. She captured the first break of the second set in the fourth game, her first of consecutive breaks on her way to a 6-1 win.

At No. 1 singles for just the second time this year, Pursell battled back from a 0-3 deficit in the first set by winning five straight games. She was unable to serve it out on her first attempt but did so on her second try at 6-5. The DU grad student began the second set by trading breaks in the first two games. The set remained on serve until Pursell broke in the ninth game for a 5-4 lead and held serve to close out the match.
