No. 43 DU Men’s Tennis Sweeps Oral Roberts on Friday

Denver moves to 20-0 with 7-0 win over ORU ahead of regular-season finale on Saturday

DENVER – The No. 43-ranked University of Denver men's tennis team (20-0, 4-0 Summit) posted its second 7-0 sweep of a Summit League opponent this season with its win against Oral Roberts outside at Denver Tennis Park on Friday afternoon.

With the win, Denver moved to a perfect 20-0 so far in 2024 with just one match left in the regular season. DU has also clinched at least a share of the 2024 Summit League regular-season title and can take it outright with a win on Saturday against Illinois State.

Coach's Notes:
From head coach Drew Eberly: "We're excited to be 20-0, and we have one more regular-season match tomorrow against a very good Illinois State team to finish the regular season undefeated, which would put us in the college tennis record books. But Illinois State is a really good team, that has had some very good wins, especially in conference this year. So we've got to get ready to play and ready to go.

"I thought today we were a little bit slow starting and sluggish in doubles, but then we picked it up and did a good job in singles. Tomorrow, we're going to have to play much better out of the gate in doubles and be ready for a battle against Illinois State. Hopefully fans come out and enjoy the good weather and watch some good tennis."

Doubles:
Denver claimed wins in all three doubles matches to begin the day 1-0, winning the doubles point for the 13th-straight dual. All three matches followed near-identical scoring patterns with the three DU teams jumping out 4-2 and then 5-2 leads.

In the No. 1 match, DU senior Nicolas Herrero Cuesta and junior Rikuto Yamaguchi wrapped up their 6-2 win first with DU's No. 2 team of graduate student Marvin Schaber and junior Daniel Sancho Arbizu matching their score just moments later.

The first matches ended with graduate student Anish Sriniketh and sophomore Raffaello Papajcik just points away from the win, which they would play out for a 6-3 Denver victory.

Singles:
Three DU players claimed their team-leading 17th singles wins of the season to help DU win all six singles matches in straight sets. Schaber was the first to collect a win, dropping just a single game midway through the second set on his way to a 6-0 6-1 win in the No. 3 match – his best result as Pioneer.

Joining Schaber in winning their 17th matches of the year were Sancho Arbizu and Herrero Cuesta in the final two matches to wrap up. The junior began with a bagel in his first set in the No. 2 singles match before rallying from 2-4 down in the second to win the final four games.

Herrero Cuesta sealed the DU sweep at No. 1 singles. Both sets followed identical scorelines with both players holding serving until the DU senior gained the first break in the sixth game and added another in what would be each set's final game for 6-2.

Senior Peter Sallay put Denver within a point of the win in his No. 4 singles match. He gained the first break for 3-1, his second of five-straight games won to end the opening set. He broke in consecutive return games to begin the second on his way to a 5-2 lead. His opponent gained one break back before Sallay served it out at 6-4.

Sriniketh clinched the dual for Denver with his fourth-straight singles win. He opened up a two-break lead at 3-0 and extended his lead to 5-2 before serving out the first set. He again broke in consecutive return games early in the second set and closed out the No. 5 singles match with another 6-2 win.

Senior Charlie Miller moved into double-digit singles wins in the No. 6 spot, claiming a bagel in the first set and then breaking again quickly in the second set. He stretched the lead to 5-2 and ultimately served it out for 6-3.
