[12/14] Denver Upsets [8] Yale in Neutral-Site Game on Monday

Lauren Black tied her career-high with eight points against the Bulldogs

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. - The [12/14] University of Denver women's lacrosse team came out on top, 12-11, after a back-and-forth battle against the [8] Yale Bulldogs on Monday afternoon at St. Joseph's University in Pennsylvania.

After trailing 7-4 to start the third quarter, the Pioneers used a 3-0 run totie the game, 7-7 in the third quarter. After a caused turnover by Sarah Pokorny inside the eight meter arc followed by Trinity McPherson picking up the ground ball and clearing it into the Denver zone, Julia Gilbert made a leaping shot to bury a goal behind the head of Cami Donadio to give Denver an 8-7 lead at 8:01 in the third.

The Pios and Bulldogs traded goals throughout the remainder of the game and were tied 11-11 with just over four minutes remaining in the final frame.

Emelia Bohi came up with a huge save off a shot by Yale's Taylor Everson with 44 seconds on the clock, followed by a successful clear by Megan Klingenberg. The Pioneers passed around the outside as time ran down before Olivia Penoyer found Lauren Black inside to bury the game-winning goal with one second remaining on the clock to give Denver the 12-11 victory.

KEY PERFORMANCES: 
Black led the Pioneers, tying her career-high with eight points in five goals and three assists. Caroline Colimore and Julia Gilbert each recorded hat tricks against the Bulldogs. Jane Earley rounds out the Pios goal-scorers at the start of Denver's 4-0 run in the third period.

Ryan Dineen added a trio of helpers and Penoyer and Kipp each added an assist. 

On the defensive end, Bryn McCaughey made a season-high 4 caused turnovers alongside four ground balls. Abby Jenkins and Trinity McPherson were a force to be reckoned with in the draw circle, accounting for 9/10 draw wins. 

Emelia Bohi made seven saves between the pipes.

NOTES:
  • Gilbert extended her team-high point streak to 38 games, posting 123 points on 105 goals and 18 assists in that span.
  • Bryn McCaughey earned a season-high four caused turnovers, her career-high, 7, came against UConn on May 7, 2023.
  • The Pioneers move to 9-32 against teams ranked in the top-10 in the country. 
  • Penoyer moves solely into ninth in Denver's record books for most assists in a single season at 40.
