No. 48 DU Women’s Tennis Adds 6-1 Win at Kansas City

Denver wins doubles point, all five singles matches contested

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 48-ranked University of Denver women's tennis team (14-6, 5-0 Summit) posted a 6-1 win at Kansas City in its penultimate match of the regular season on Saturday.

Denver won its second road match in as many days, despite opting to play with just five singles players.

Doubles:
Denver's No. 1 team of graduate student Britt Pursell and junior Andrea Burguete Beltran started the dual off with a bagel to get DU halfway to the doubles point. The Roos claimed the No. 3 match to keep things close, but DU sophomores Louise Wikander and Caroline Driscoll secured the doubles point for Denver with a 6-4 win.

Singles:
Denver chose to play with only five student-athletes in singles, giving Kansas City a point at the No. 6 spot before DU rattled off wins on the other five courts.

Sophomore Alice Otis put DU back ahead at 2-1, losing just a single game at No. 4 singles in her best performance as a Pioneer and doing so with her first bagel of the season. Driscoll won her team-leading 15th singles match of the year after dropping just three games in her straight-sets victory. Pursell then clinched the dual for Denver at No. 2 singles, joining Otis with a bagel after notching a 6-4 first set.

The final two singles matches to be played were decided by 10-point tiebreaks, first in a win for sophomore Claudia Martinez de Velasco in the No. 5 match. She rallied back after losing the first set in a tiebreak to even up the scoreline with a bagel in the second. In the final breaker, she doubled up her opponent, winning 10-5.

Beltran captured the final point of the day, also coming back from a set down. She began the comeback with a 6-2 win in the second set before finishing with a 10-8 win in the 10-point tiebreak.
