Denver Women's Lacrosse Season Comes to a Close in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

Julia Gilbert's two goals put her tied for first in program history with 202 career goals.

EVANSTON, Ill. - The University of Denver women's lacrosse team fell to the top-seeded Northwestern Wildcats on Sunday afternoon in Evanston, Illinois.

The Pioneers dropped the second round matchup 4-17. 

Graduate student attacker Julia Gilbert's team-high two goals put her in a tie a top the record books with 202 career goals. Sloane Kipp and Lauren Black tallied the other two goals for Denver. Olivia Penoyer finished the her Pioneer with 56 assists, the second most ever by a member of the Crimson and Gold in a single season.

Denver finished the season 16-4, including its a seventh-consecutive undefeated Big East Conference season, Big East regular season and tournament titles. The Pioneers only losses came against top-10 teams in Michigan, Maryland and Northwestern.

NOTES:
  • Gilbert extended her team-high point streak to 42 games, posting 136 points in 119 goals and 19 assists in that span.
  • The Mclean, Virginia native tied for first in the record books with 202 career goals, only the second player in program history to hit 200-goal milestone.
  • Her 62 goals this season are the fourth-most ever by a Pioneer.
  • Penoyer moves into second in program history with 56 assists this season. Her 82 points are seventh-most by a Pioneer in a single-season.
  • Sam Thacker is second all-time with 179 career ground balls. Her 186 career caused turnovers are the most ever recorded by a member of the Crimson and Gold. She owns the second-most career ground balls with 179.
  • Bryn McCaughey is now sixth with 97 career-caused turnovers.
  • Gilbert, Thacker, McCaughey, Abby Jenkins and Anna Palmisano make up five of the top-10 most games played in the Crimson and Gold, with GIlbert atop the leader board with 88 career games. 
  • Palmisano and Thacker are tied for the program record, both starting in 81 games over the course of their careers.
