Denver Women’s Soccer Set to Play at Southern Utah on Sunday

DU wraps up first week of four straight away from home

WHO: Denver (4-3-0, 0-0-0 Summit) at Southern Utah (1-3-1, 0-0-0 WAC)
WHAT: DU's second match of five-game road trip
WHERE: Thunderbird Soccer Field (Cedar City, Utah)
WHEN: Sunday, September 8, at 12:30 p.m. MT

LAST TIME OUT:
Denver began its five-match streak away from home with its third nationally-ranked opponent of the season, falling at No. 18 Colorado, 1-0, on Thursday. The match was scoreless at halftime for the fifth time so far this year before CU's Ava Priest scored the night's only goal in the 78th minute off a rebound after Denver junior Alina Santos saved an initial free kick from 20 yards out.

QUICK HITS:
  • Following Thursday's night slate of matches across the country, sophomore Michaela McGowan is tied for No. 2 in the nation in total assists (6) and is tied for No. 10 nationally in assists per game (0.80).
    • The sophomore has been involved in eight of DU's last 10 goals (two goals, six assists).
    • Her six assists are already more than a Pioneer had in all of 2023. The last time a DU player had more than six in a season was 2021 (Natalie Beckman with 18 and Sami Feller with 11).
  • In the match at Colorado, redshirt senior Addisyn Hyrup made her first start since an injury cost her the entire 2023 season and played the full 90 minutes for the first time in her career.
  • Denver went eight consecutive halves without allowing a goal (beginning with the second half at Texas A&M on August 21 and ending with the second half at Colorado on Thursday night).
  • Sunday's match will be Denver's third of the season against a first-time opponent in SUU.
    • DU also faced off against Texas A&M and Lamar for the first time in its DI history, coming away with shutout wins against both teams on August 21 and 25, respectively.
    • SUU will also be DU's fifth opponent that DU entered the season with one or fewer previous meetings against, joining North Carolina and Idaho State (one apiece), and Texas A&M and Lamar (first-time meeting).
SCOUTING THE THUNDERBIRDS:
Southern Utah is coming off its first win of the season, posting a 2-0 win on Thursday at home against Colorado College. Sarah Assumma collected a brace with two second-half goals scored less than five minutes apart. Whitney Gardner had an assist on both goals, and Yui Fujii had the second helper on the game winner.

DU and SUU share one common opponent already through the 2024 season with both teams earning 2-0 home victories against Colorado College. SUU has also faced a future DU opponent in Summit League foe Omaha, losing 1-2 to the Mavericks on August 22.

WHAT'S NEXT:
Denver visits Colorado State on Thursday, September 12, for its only match next week. It will be DU's middle match of a five-match road trip that will keep the Pioneers away from home for nearly the entire month of September.
