Matt Davis Named to 2025 Mike Richter Award Watch List

Denver hockey senior is up for the nation’s top goaltender award

DENVER – University of Denver hockey senior goaltender Matt Davis has been named to the 2025 Mike Richter Award Watch List, the Hockey Commissioners Association announced on Wednesday.

Davis one of 35 student-athletes currently for the Mike Richter Award, given annually to the top goaltender in NCAA Division-I hockey since 2014. To qualify for the watch list, a netminder must have a 2.30 or lower goals-against average and a .920 or higher save percentage.

Other names may be added for consideration before the first formal vote.

With a 16-5-0 record so far in 2024-25, Davis currently leads the NCAA in wins and sports a 1.95 goals-against average, .923 save percentage and one shutout. He made a season-high 44 saves on 46 shots on Jan. 4, 2025 at Maine—the most saves in a regulation game of his career—and finished the Jan. 3-4 series by stopping 73-of-76 shots, earning his second NCHC Goaltender of the Week award of the season.

The Calgary, Alberta, native earned his 50th career win on Saturday in a 6-2 victory against the Miami RedHawks and became just the 13th Denver goalie to reach the half-century mark. He currently ranks in the top 10 in program history in career goals-against average (2.11) and save percentage (.920) and is close to reaching that threshold with his 50 wins (13th) and five shutouts (13th) in 71 career games (64 starts).

Davis won NCAA National Championships with the Pioneers in both 2022 and 2024, and he won a career-best 20 straight games from March 9-Nov. 14, 2024, which included posting three career-long shutout streaks in that time. His most recent personal-best clean-sheet stretch was 154:45 from Oct. 25-Nov. 8, 2024 (three games).

Denver has had one previous recipient of the Mike Richter Award, with Tanner Jaillet picking up the honor in 2017.

Overall, the NCHC has eight goaltenders on the Richter Award Watch List, with Davis being joined by Arizona State's Gibson Homer, Minnesota Duluth's Klayton Knapp, Omaha's Simon Latkoczy, Colorado College's Kaidan Mbereko, St. Cloud State's Isak Posch and Western Michigan's Cameron Rowe and Hampton Slukynsky.

A committee of voters—made up of a cross section of coaches, administrators, scouts and media—will pare this list down to approximately a dozen semifinalists within the next three weeks and then ultimately choose a winner from three finalists. The award will be  announced in April during the NCAA Frozen Four in St. Louis, Missouri.
