DENVER – The University of Denver men's basketball program dropped an 80-62 game to Omaha on Wednesday night inside Hamilton Gymnasium.
The Pioneers (6-14, 0-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Josh Pickett, who had 16 points. Sebastian Akins tacked on 16 points, four assists and two blocks and Abdulai Fanta Kabba chipped in as well with 10 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
NOTES:
- Josh Pickett finished with a season-high 16 points and 2 rebounds.
- Pickett finished in double figures for the second-straight game and for the third time in his freshman campaign.
- Sebastian Akins finished with 16 points and 4 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal.
- Akins finished in double figures for the 14th time in his freshman season.
- Abdulai Fanta Kabba finished with 10 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks.
- Kabba finished in double figures for the first time in his NCAA career.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Denver raced out to a 7-2 lead in the opening three minutes before a big Omaha run flipped the lead to the Mavs, who stretched it out to as many as 11 with 4:56 to go in the half. The Pioneers cut into that deficit, getting it to as little as five before late triple sent Omaha into the break with an eight-point advantage. Josh Pickett and Sebastian Akins led the Pioneers with eight points apiece in the opening 20 minutes.
Denver could not pull any closer in the second half, losing by a final of 80-62. Denver shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting five shots from deep to score 15 of its 34 points.
