No. 5 Denver Ties Omaha 3-3

Pioneers fall 4-3 in shootout as Mavericks take extra point

DENVER – The No. 5 University of Denver hockey team tied the Omaha Mavericks 3-3 on Friday night in the series opener at Magness Arena.

Omaha earned the extra point in the conference standings by winning the best-of-three shootout 4-3 in 16 rounds. It was the longest shootout in both DU and NCHC history.

The Pioneers (18-6-1, 7-5-1 NCHC) and Mavericks (14-10-1, 10-4-1 NCHC) wrap up their season series on Saturday at 6 p.m. MT at Magness Arena (NCHC.tv). Limited tickets are available.

Sophomore defenseman Eric Pohlkamp (1g/1a) and Junior forward Rieger Lorenz (0g/2a) both recorded two points for Denver (18-6-1, 7-5-1 NCHC), while sophomores Kieran Cebrian and Zeev Buium joined Pohlkamp with a goal apiece.

Senior goaltender Matt Davis made 26 saves through overtime and denied 12 pucks during the shootout.  Mavs goalie Simon Latkoczy stopped 39-of-42 shots that the Pios sent his way and went 13-for-16 in the shootout.

The Pios evened the score at 3-3 early in the third period after trailing by two goals in the second stanza.

Pohlkamp scored in the last minute of the middle frame to put the Pios within one of the Mavericks and Buium recorded the game-equalizer with his sixth goal of the season 1:12 into the third. Cebrian scored DU's first goal to knot the score at 1-1 just 40 seconds into the second period.

Aidan Thompson scored in the third round of the shootout to extend the tiebreaker while Jack Devine tallied in round 4 and Boston Buckberger found the back of the net in the 10th round. Nolan Krenzen netted the decisive goal for Omaha in the 16th round.

Denver finished with a 42-29 edge in shots on goal.
