DENVER, CO --The Denver women's basketball team came up short in a 79-42 loss to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in Hamilton Gymnasium on Saturday.
Jordan Jones led the Pioneers (7-8, 0-2) with 13 points and four assists. Laia Monclova tacked on six points and two blocks off of the bench and Emma Smith chipped in as well with seven points.
Denver disrupted the Jackrabbit's shots well in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Monclova's two rejections led the way individually for the Pioneers.
How It Happened
After falling behind 5-0, Denver went on an 8-0 run with 7:10 left in the first quarter to take an 8-5 lead. The Pioneers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 12-11 advantage. Denver relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 12 points.
South Dakota State rallied to take a 25-17 lead before Denver went on a 5-0 run starting at the 2:20 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Jones, to narrow its deficit to 25-22. South Dakota State responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Pioneers trailing 31-22 heading into halftime.
Denver's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Pioneers faced a 51-32 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Denver knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 10 total points.
Denver could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 79-42. Denver took advantage of four South Dakota State turnovers in the quarter, scoring three points off of those takeaways.
