PREVIEW: No. 6 Denver Hosts Miami to Resume NCHC Play

Pioneers split last weekend’s top-10 series at Maine to conclude their non-conference schedule

DENVER – The No. 6 University of Denver hockey team returns to conference play this weekend as the Pioneers host the Miami RedHawks in a two-game series at Magness Arena that begins on Friday.

Friday's game begins at 7 p.m. MT and will be televised regionally on Altitude 2. Saturday's start time is 6 p.m. MT. Both contests will also be broadcast on NCHC.tv. Limited tickets are available

Denver wrapped up non-conference play last weekend by splitting a top-10 series at the No. 7 Maine Black Bears. The Pioneers won 2-1 last Friday before falling by the same score on Saturday. Cale Ashcroft scored the game-winning goal with 20 seconds left in regulation and goaltender Matt Davis made 44 saves in the loss on Saturday.

Davis stopped 73 of the 76 shots he faced in the two-game series in Maine and was recognized on Monday as the NCHC Goaltender of the Week—his second such award of the season and the fourth of his career.

The matchup in Orono marked DU's first regular-season contests after the Holiday Break. The Pioneers finished its non-conference schedule with an 11-1-0 mark and had won 20 straight games against non-NCHC opponents dating back to Nov. 11, 2023 at Arizona State prior to its one-goal loss on Saturday.

Miami is set to play its first game in more than a month, as the RedHawks last faced then-No. 16 North Dakota on Dec. 6-7, falling by 5-4 and 4-2 scores at home. Miami has a 3-13-2 overall record and has dropped its last 10 contests.  The RedHawks have one point and a 0-8-0 record to place ninth in the NCHC standings; the Pioneers are currently sixth with 11 points and a 4-4-0 record in conference play.

Denver and Miami faced off in one home series last season, with the Pios earning the extra conference point in a shootout after a 3-3 tie on Feb. 23 before winning 8-1 on Feb. 24. The teams will meet twice this year, as the Pioneers will travel to Oxford next month on Feb. 21-22.

Overall, DU has a 33-13-4 all-time record against Miami and is unbeaten in the last 14 meetings (13-0-1). The Pioneers sport a 19-1-1 mark in the last 21 games and are unbeaten in their last 13 contests (12-0-1) at Magness Arena against the RedHawks, as MU's last win in Denver was Feb. 22, 2019 (3-1).

LAST TIME OUT: The Pioneers split their final non-conference series of the season at No. 7 Maine, winning 2-1 on Friday before falling by the same 2-1 score on Saturday.  No. 6 DU won the top-10 series opener after Cale Ashcroft tallied with 20 seconds remaining in the third period.  Carter King also scored and Eric Pohlkamp had two assists.

Sam Harris netted a goal on Saturday to give DU a 1-0 lead in the first period, but Maine tied the outing before the intermission and scored the eventual game-winner early in the third frame.  DU goaltender Matt Davis made 29 saves on Friday before stopping 44-of-46 shots on Saturday.

DOMINANT DAVIS: Senior goaltender Matt Davis shined in the series at Maine last weekend, as he stopped 73-of-76 shots he faced in the two games. He made 29 saves on Friday before denying a season-best 44-of-46 shots on Saturday.

The 44 saves were the most he's made in a regulation game in his career and were two shy of matching his career best of 46 that he set in a double-overtime win on March 28, 2024 vs. Massachusetts in NCAA Northeast Regional Semifinals.  Saturday's performance was the first 40-plus save effort by a DU netminder since that performance against UMass; Davis' previous high in a regulation game was 39 saves on 41 shots on Feb. 2, 2024 vs. Western Michigan.

Davis made 21-of-22 saves in the first period on Saturday—the most shots faced and stopped in a stanza this season by a DU goalie.

The Calgary, Alberta, native was named the NCHC Goaltender of the Week on Monday. It was his fourth such award of his career and the second of the season after also earning the honor on Nov. 11.19-1

CLUTCH CALE: Sophomore defenseman Cale Ashcroft scored his third game-winning goal of the season on Saturday after hitting twine on a shot with 20 seconds left in regulation.  Each of his three goals this year have been game-winners, which are also the first of his career.

He also scored in the third period on Oct. 25 vs. Wisconsin and Dec. 14 vs. Colorado College. His goals on Dec. 14 and Jan. 3 marked the first time in his career that he registered points in back-to-back games.

NOTABLES:

  • The Pioneers have now played in six straight one-goal games and have played three consecutive 2-1 contests.  DU's only such 2-1 outings last season came in three straight games to begin the NCAA Tournament.
  • Denver finished non-conference play this season with an 11-1-0 record, going 5-1-0 in road games.
  • DU had won four straight games over Maine before falling on Saturday.  The team is now 5-3-0 in the last eight games and owns a 10-13-0 all-time record in the series with the Black Bears.

MID-POINT MARKERS: Denver has a 14-4-0 record at the halfway point of the season, with its .777 winning percentage tied for the program's best mark at the midpoint in the last 20 years.  Both the 2022-23 and 2007-08 squads also had a 14-4-0 record midway through their 36-game regular season.

Only the 2001-02 team has posted a better winning percentage since the turn of the century, that group had an. 888 mark and a 16-2-0 overall record at the halfway point of its 36-game campaign.

Denver has a 15-5-0 record in the first 20 games this year, with its .750 winning percentage tied for the program's fourth-best mark after 20 games since 2000.

PIONEERS AT THE WORLD JUNIORS: Denver hockey was once again well-represented on Team USA at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship with head coach David Carle leading the Americans' bench for the second-straight year and sophomore defenseman Zeev Buium serving as an alternate captain on this year's team.

Team USA defeated Finland in overtime in the Gold Medal Game on Sunday to give the Americans their first-ever back-to-back World Junior titles. Buium played the second-most minutes among all players at the tournament at 25:13 per game and totaled six points on two goals and four assists, including registering helpers on both the U.S.'s game-tying and game-winning goals in the overtime victory against Finland in the final.

Carle and Buium were joined on the United States team with Denver director of hockey operations/video coach Travis Culhane and equipment manager Nick Meldrum, who also served in the same roles in on Team USA 2024.  Also on Carle's staff are former Pioneer assistants Steve Miller (Minnesota) and David Lassonde (USA Hockey).

The 2024 tournament marked the first time that Carle had coached a USA roster in his career, and he joined Marshall Johnston (1977) as the only Denver coaches to guide a U.S. World Junior squad. Carle is the only U.S. coach to win multiple World Junior titles and he is the third NCHC head coach to lead the Americans to gold at the tournament, joining former St. Cloud coach Bob Motzko (2017) and North Dakota and Omaha coach Dean Blais (2010 w/Omaha).

ASSISTANT COACHING EXPERIENCE: DU assistant coaches Tavis MacMillan and Dallas Ferguson own a 9-1-0 regular-season record when running the bench in head coach David Carle's absence (family, illness, World Juniors).  Both MacMillan and Ferguson are former head coaches at Alaska Fairbanks.

The Pioneers outscored opponents 23-8 in four games in 2023-24 while Carle was away for the birth of his second son, Callum (Oct. 7-8, 2023) and coaching at the 2024 World Junior Championship (Jan. 5-6, 2024).

MILESTONE MEN: Junior forward Rieger Lorenz skated in his 100th career game on Jan. 3 at Maine, becoming the first Pioneer to reach the century mark this season.  Fellow classmates Jared Wright (two away) and Aidan Thompson (four away) are also within five games of 100 in their Denver tenure as well.

Graduate student Connor Caponi and senior Jack Devine each played in a milestone game on Nov. 1 at Yale, as Caponi became the 70th player in program history to play 150 contests while Devine skated in his 125th career outing that night as well.  Senior Carter King skated in his 125th game on Nov. 9 against Lindenwood.

Caponi was the first DU player to reach the 150-game mark since Kyle Mayhew on March 10, 2023 vs. Miami, and he is seven contests from tying former teammate Ryan Barrow's school record of 168 games played (2017-2022).  Barrow reached the milestone in the 2022 NCAA National Championship Game where he scored the game-tying goal that sparked DU to a 5-1 victory against Minnesota State.

HISTORY VS. MIAMI: Denver leads the all-time series with a 33-13-4 record and is unbeaten in the last 14 meetings with Miami (13-0-1).  The Pioneers had their series-record 12-game winning streak come to an end in the first game of last year's lone series with the RedHawks, as the teams tied 3-3 on Feb. 23, 2024—though DU did win the shootout to earn the extra conference point.  The Pios responded the next night by winning 8-1, with the only goal allowed coming off their own stick during a delayed penalty.  Denver swept Miami in two games in both the 2022 and 2023 NCHC Quarterfinal series.  The RedHawks' last victory over the Pios was a 3-0 win on Dec. 19, 2020 in the NCHC Pod in Omaha, Nebraska.  The Pioneers are 19-1-1 in the last 21 matchups and are 24-3-4 in the series since Jan. 30, 2016.  At home, DU has a 18-5-4 record in the series that dates back to Nov. 14, 1986.  The Pios are unbeaten in the past 13 contests at Magness Arena against MU, as their last loss at home in the series was Feb. 22, 2019 (3-1).

PREVIOUS MEETING (FEB. 24, 2024): Junior forward Tristan Broz matched a career high with four points and goaltender Matt Davis stopped all 27 shots in a clean-sheet performance on Saturday night as the No. 3 Denver Pioneers hockey team defeated the Miami RedHawks 8-1 at Magness Arena.  Though Denver allowed a goal, Davis still finished with zero goals against and a perfect 1.000 save percentage on the evening due to how Miami scored. The RedHawks' lone tally came during their own delayed penalty with 1:16 left in the first period after the puck was redirected the length of the ice and into an open DU net.  Davis was on the bench at the time while DU pulled him for the extra attacker.  Davis also made an impact offensively, as he also added an assist—the second of his career and second in three games.  Broz led all scorers in the game with a goal and three assists, marking his fourth career four-point outing and his second-ever contest with three helpers.  Freshman defenseman Boston Buckberger tied a career high with three assists, and fellow rookie Kieran Cebrian recorded his first multi-point game with a pair of helpers.  Junior forward Jack Devine had two points (1g/1a) and classmate Sean Behrens, who was playing in his 100th career game, also recorded multiple points with two assists.
