Denver Drops Match to the Tommies in Four.

DENVER - The University of Denver volleyball team fell to the St. Thomas Tommies (18-25, 26-28, 25-22, 26-24) on Tuesday night in Hamilton Gymnasium.

LEADERS: 
Ava Reynolds earned a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs. 
Genevieve Lewis added 16 kills and Jamia Johnson and Izabela Molina each added nine. 
Defensively, Maddie Winkler had 16 digs and Kate Perryman had six blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
Denver and St. Thomas battled back and forth before an ace from Emma Mirabelli gave the Pioneers the first lead of the set at 5-4. The Tommies battled to take an 11-10 lead but a tip by Jamia Johnson tied it back up immediately. From that point on, St. Thomas took a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 15-11, Denver cut the deficit to three but dropped the set, 25-18.

SET 2
DU took an early 6-3 lead, but the Tommies answered with a 5-1 run to take a 9-8 lead. Both teams traded kills before four straight errors by Denver gave St. Thomas a 16-12 lead. The Pioneers found momentum off a massive back-row effort by Madison Winkler and Ava Reynolds at the pin to tie the match at 24 and send it to extras, but lost set two, 28-26.

SET 3
UST starts with 5-1 lead. Denver tied it up 9-9 and took a 10-9 lead. DU and UST traded kills throughout the set, but the Pioneers built momentum with a 6-1. Jamia Johnson and Izabela Molina had sparkplug style kills to extend the lead to 19-15. Despite a late rally by the Tommies, DU held on to win the set, 25-22.

SET 4
The Pioneers went back and forth with the Tommies to start the match. Kate Perryman showed off her strength with a big swing in the middle to give DU a 7-6 lead. Both teams traded rallies and kills throughout the middle of the set. Johnson and Molina once again made a big block to earn a 16-15 lead. Perryman tallied her sixth block of the night and a Tommie error gave DU a late 23-20 lead. St. Thomas battled back with four-straight points and won the set, 26-24.

The Pioneers travel to Vermillion, South Dakota to take on the Yotes on Thursday at 6 p.m. MT.
