BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Denver Pioneers dropped the match to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, 15-25, 23-25, 25-21, 24-26, on Saturday afternoon.
LEADERS
Ava Reynolds led the Pioneers with a double-double of 14 kills and 14 digs.
Genevieve Lewis added 13 kills and
Jamia Johnson had 12.
Madison Winkler made 18 digs and
Izzy Rawlings added 12.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
South Dakota State held the advantage from the start, taking an early 9-4 lead. Denver struggled to piece together offensive momentum and dropped the set, 25-15.
SET 2
The Pioneers and the Jacks went back and forth to start set two with SDSU holding a narrow lead. Denver tied it up at nine and a big swing by Johnson gave DU a brief 10-9 lead. The Jacks tied it back up at 13-13 and took a run of their own to take an 18-13 lead. Denver battled back with four straight points but ultimately dropped the set, 25-23.
SET 3
The Jacks took an early 5-3 lead and Denver started the set unable to build consistent offensive momentum. At the halfway mark of the set the Pioneers went on a 5-0 run and a solo block by
Kate Perryman alongside an ace by
Ilayda Eren gave the Pios a 23-21 lead. A big swing by Lewis closes out the set and gives the Pioneers a 25-21 set three win.
SET 4
After a back and forth start, Denver took a 4-0 run for a 4-2 lead. The Jacks responded with a run of their own to take a 9-6 lead. The Pioneers respond with three straight kills to tie it 9-9. Another three kills and a block by
Izabela Molina and Reynolds extends DU's lead to 15-12. SDSU and DU battle back and forth but SDSU ties it up at 24 and ultimately wins the set, 26-24.
