DENVER – The No. 6 Denver Pioneers hockey team scored four power-play goals and goaltender
Quentin Miller stopped all 17 shots he faced in a 6-0 victory against the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Saturday night at Magness Arena.
Forward
James Reeder scored twice and added an assist and defenseman
Boston Buckberger also had a three-point game with a trio of helpers. Freshman
Kristian Epperson tallied twice, while defensemen
Eric Jamieson and
Eric Pohlkamp each had a goal and an assist apiece.
The freshman Miller recorded his second shutout of the season despite not being tested much. DU outshot UAA 49-17 and held a 33-7 margin in shots on goal after two periods of play.
"I liked a lot of how we played," said DU Richard and Kitzia Goodman Hockey Head Coach
David Carle. "Started on time. Just thought our determination to score, be in the inside and be able to execute offensively was there tonight. Liked their competitiveness all the way up until the end. Special teams were a big part of it as well. Went 4-for-7 on the power play, 2-for-2 on the [penalty] kill. So again, we did a lot of the things that we wanted to do to be able to create separation in the game."
Denver (4-3-1) had 11 different players record a point to earn a series split against Alaska Anchorage (1-5-0) after falling in overtime on Friday at home.
The Pioneers scored four power-play goals on seven opportunities, both season highs, while holding off the Seawolves on their two man advantages.
Denver led 2-0 after the first period and took a 5-0 advantage going into the second intermission. All three of the Pios' markers in the middle period were on the power play, including Epperson and Pohlkamp tallying in a matter of 18 seconds of one another.
Reeder registered his second goal at 8:59 of the third period during a scramble in front of the net—his second such tally of the evening.
Seawolves goaltender Tyler Krivtsov finished with 43 saves.
UP NEXT: Denver heads back on the road for a Frozen Four rematch and the start of conference play at Western Michigan on Friday and Saturday at Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo.

QUOTABLES
Richard and Kitzia Goodman Hockey Head Coach David Carle
On the effective power play in the game: "Probably a killer instinct in and around the net front. You know, last night we had some looks, some chances to get sticks on things. Wasn't able to go in for us last night, and tonight I think bearing down on our chances. We had a lot of zone time both nights. We were able to execute and finish tonight."
On the upcoming game against Western Michigan: "Defending national champions. For me, best team in the country until they're knocked off that throne. Excellent team, got a great goaltender, great coaching staff, so no holes. No holes in many of the teams in our league, so it'll be an absolute battle, and we're looking forward to the challenge getting on the road again."
Sophomore Forward James Reeder
On getting a win: "It was nice. I mean, we had a tough go yesterday. I mean, power play wasn't great, and then today came back, power play was really good, and we're able to get it done."
On finding scrappy goals: "I mean, just getting to the net-front. I mean, most of the goals come from the net-front, so kind of just have to get there."
On the team development early in the season: "I mean, it's tough coming in with 10 freshmen. Them getting used to the speed, but I think they're doing really well. Hopefully we can expand on this one next weekend at Western."
Junior Defenseman Eric Pohlkamp
On team response with two goals in 14 seconds in the second period: "Yeah, I think we have really good zone entry and [Brady] Milburn made a nice play across the ice to [James] Reeder, and then Fish (
Jake Fisher) kind of came over and sucked that first guy in. To be honest, I was just trying to get my shots on net, and lucky enough it went in for me."
In response to coming back after Friday's game: "I mean, even in the stands watching, there is just so much frustration, our power play hasn't been clicking all this year, and it's just nice for our confidence going into next weekend against Western Michigan. Two really big games for us. I mean, those are the big boys. So hopefully we can carry it on for next weekend."
On looking for revenge vs. WMU: "Absolutely, you obviously want that right. They ended our season last year, and they took a trophy from us, actually two trophies. So we're really looking forward to playing them, it's an awesome environment so can't wait."
In response to team development early in the season: "I think the guys are just getting more comfortable and the freshmen are getting more comfortable around each other. I think we still need to have some team bonding stuff going on. But I think just over time, they'll know who they're playing with. Obviously we switched the lines up a good amount today. So hopefully we get a couple lines that stay together throughout the season."
