DENVER – The University of Denver men's basketball program fell to Wyoming 101-59 on Wednesday night inside the Arena Auditorium.
LEADERS:
Wyoming had five players finish in double figures led by 16 from Leland Walker.
Sophomore Carson Johnson led the Pioneers in scoring with 16, and junior forward Gabe Oldham posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Half:
After Denver opened the game on a 4-0 run, a quick 9-0 response from Wyoming gave the Cowboys an early lead. The Pioneers cold shooting continued throughout the rest of the opening 10 minutes of the first half, as Denver started out 0-for-9 from beyond the arc to allow Wyoming to push its lead to 19-10 at the under-12. Zane Nelson hit Denver's first triple on the other side of the second media timeout to get Denver going from beyond the arc.
The two teams traded buckets in the middle stages of the first half before a 6-0 Wyoming run extended the Cowboys lead to its biggest margin at 12 with nine seconds to go. Carson Johnson cashed in on a pair from the line in the final possession, but Denver still trailed 37-27 at the half.
Second Half:
Wyoming shot out of the half on a 13-2 run to push the lead to 50-29 and force a Denver timeout. After Denver stemmed the tide, it was another quick 8-0 spurt in 1:40 that pushed the Cowboys lead to 25 with 13 minutes to play.
Wyoming continued to stretch out its lead to cruise to its sixth win in seven games.
NOTES:
Carson Johnson finished with 16 points.
Johnson finished in double figures for the fifth-straight game, the sixth time this season and the 26th time in his collegiate career.
Gabe Oldham finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Oldham recorded Denver's first double-double of the season.
