OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of Denver volleyball team fell to Omaha (22-25, 24-26, 21-25) on Saturday afternoon in Omaha, Nebraska.
Izabela Molina led the Pioneers offensively with 10 kills and six blocks.
Ava Reynolds and
Genevieve Lewis each added eight kills and
Alicia Thibodeau had nine.
Defensively,
Madison Winkler made 10 digs and Reynolds added eight.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
The Pioneers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead to start set one off a kill by Molina and back-to-back errors by the Mavericks. Omaha responded with a 4-0 run of their own to take a 4-3 lead. The Pioneers and Mavericks traded kills throughout the middle of the set before Omaha scored five straight points to extend their lead to 20-15. Denver battled and cut the deficit to 20-21, but couldn't complete the comeback and dropped the set, 25-22.
SET 2
Omaha took an early 5-3 lead before Denver's 3-0 run tied the set, 6-6. Winkler recorded the first ace of the set to give Denver an 8-7 lead. Both teams traded kills throughout, but the Mavericks' 6-0 run out of the media timeout extended their lead to 19-13. The Pioneers cut the deficit to one but ultimately dropped the set, 26-24.
SET 3
The Mavericks took an early 7-10 lead to start set three before Denver made a five-point run to tie it up, 12-12. Despite several late rallies, Denver set, 25-21.
