Johnson’s Winner Earns Denver Road Win at Montana State

Sophomore Carson Johnson scored the game-winner with 1.8 seconds to go to send the Pioneers to their first win under head coach Tim Bergstraser

BOZEMAN, Montana – Graduate student Jeremiah Burke led all scorers with 23 points and sophomore Carson Johnson added 19, none bigger than the floating jumper with 1.8 seconds left to send the University of Denver men's basketball program to a 75-73 road win at Montana State on Sunday afternoon at Worthington Arena.

The win was the first DI win for head coach Tim Bergstraser, and was Bergstraser's 76th NCAA win overall.

LEADERS:
Burke led the Pioneers with 23 points and seven rebounds to continue his hot start to his graduate season, and his first season as a Pioneer. Burke shot 9-for-13 from the field, and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc.

Johnson shot 8-for-16 from the floor and scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half, including the game-winner. The Denver sophomore went 6-of-10 in the second half.

Logan Kinsey was the third and final Pioneer in double figures, scoring 15 on 7-of-11 shooting.

Jed Miller and Davian Brown led the way for Montana State with 16 apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Half:

Denver opened the game on a 14-9 run that saw all five starters score. By the second media timeout, Jeremiah Burke had seven and Logan Kinsey had five, but a quick 7-0 Montana State run flipped the score and the hosts took a five-point advantage at the midway point of the half.

The Pioneers withstood and responded after the run, cutting the lead to give at the final media timeout of the first half.

Zane Nelson hit a triple to beat the buzzer to send the two teams into the locker room all square at 38.

Burke led all scorers with 19 in the opening 20 minutes on 8-of-10 shooting. Kinsey chipped in seven.

Second Half:
In the early stages of the second half, Montana State stretched its lead back out to five, but the Pioneers didn't let the lead get beyond five, getting buckets from Shaun Wysocki and Johnson to even things back up at – with 12:52 to go.

The two teams battled back and forth, staying mostly within a possession game before a MSU triple stretched the home team's lead to five once more at 69-64 with 4:43 to play.

Denver trimmed the margin to one before Johnson hit his second-half triple with 1:33 to play to give the Pioneers their first lead of the second half at 73-71.

A pair of Montana State free-throws tied things back-up at 73-73, setting up the stage for Johnson's game-winning floater from the block.
