DENVER – Denver Pioneers hockey freshman
Quentin Miller was named the NCHC Goaltender of the Week on Tuesday, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference announced.
Miller picked up his third goalie of the week award of the season and his second in as many weeks. He previously earned the honor on Nov. 18 and Dec. 9, and he was also named rookie of the week by the conference on Nov. 11.
The Montreal, Quebec, native stopped 65-of-70 shots faced in the Pioneers' two games last weekend at St. Cloud State. He stopped 37 shots on Friday in a 5-1 victory at the Huskies before making 28-of-32 saves on Saturday in a 4-3 loss. He combined for a .929 save percentage and 2.60 goals-against average in the series.
Denver's defeat ended the team's and Miller's 12-game run of not losing in regulation (8-3-0), a stretch that began on Oct. 31. With an 11-5-1 overall record this season, Miller is among the nation's leaders in wins (third-tied), as well as with his 1.92 goals-against average (10th-tied), .931 save percentage (11th-tied) and three shutouts (first-tied).
The Pioneers' netminder has started 16 consecutive games since Oct. 18, and Miler's performance on Friday marked his ninth contest of the season where he's allowed one goal or fewer.
Arizona State's Bennett Schimek was named the NCHC Forward of the Week, while Colorado College's Phillipe Blaise-Savoie was selected as Defenseman of the Week and goalie Jan Spunar of North Dakota was chosen as Rookie of the Week.
UP NEXT: No. 6 Denver is on its holiday break and resumes the season on Jan. 2-3 with a home non-conference series against No. 14/15 Maine. The series opener on that Friday is at 7 p.m. MT and will be televised on Altitude 2 while the Saturday contest is at 6 p.m. MT. Both games will also be broadcast on NCHC.tv.
