ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Denver Pioneers Nordic squad has spent the past few weeks in Alaska getting in on-snow training and its first races of the season.
DU held winter training camps in Fairbanks and Anchorage and then took part in four days of U.S. SuperTour events at Kincaid Park in Anchorage.
The initial races on Dec. 6-7 were supposed to be held in Fairbanks but were moved south to Anchorage due to weather. The four events over the nine days included classic and freestyle sprints, as well as 10-kilometer classic and freestyle interval starts.
Denver's women led the group with sophomore
Anna Stewart finishing 13th in classic sprints and 19th overall in the 10K freestyle and freshman
Ruby Serrouya earning a top-five overall by placing fifth in freestyle sprints. Serrouya also took a spot on the U20 junior podium in several racing, placing first in her age group in both classic sprints and the 10K freestyle and was second in the 10K classic.
The Pioneers' Nordic group is now on its winter break before reconvening after the New Year with the start of the U.S. Cross Country National Championships on Jan. 4 in Lake Placid, New York. The U.S. Nationals include the next round of SuperTour events as well as the start of the collegiate season with the RMISA Invitational.
