DENVER – Five different players found the back of the net for the No. 6 University of Denver hockey team on Saturday night as the Pioneers defeated the No. 19 Miami RedHawks 5-2 at Magness Arena to sweep the weekend series.
Three freshmen scored for Denver (11-5-1, 7-1-0 NCHC), as defenseman
Eric Jamieson and forwards
Brendan McMorrow and
Kyle Chyzowski all hit twine while sophomore
Hagen Burrows and junior
Sam Harris also tallied. In total, 10 different Pioneers registered points on the evening.
Goaltender
Quentin Miller stopped 22-of-24 shots faced to help DU secure its first home weekend sweep of the season. Fellow rookie netminder
Johnny Hicks made his collegiate debut for Denver with 1:28 remaining in the third period (one save).
Burrows and McMorrow both scored unassisted goals in the contest, with Burrows opening the scoring at 3:02 of the first frame after intercepting a clearing attempt by the RedHawks. McMorrow netted the game-winning marker during a penalty kill with 3:26 left in the second period off a great individual effort. He fought for the loose puck in the neutral zone, spun past a Miami defender twice before depositing the puck over the shoulder of goalie Matteo Drobac.
Drobac finished with 26 saves as DU outshot MU 31-25 overall. Miami (10-6-0, 2-6-0 NCHC) twice tied the outing, evening the score at 1-1 from Matteo Giampa in the first and 2-2 on a marker from Maximilion Helgeson in the second.
Chyzowski netted the Pioneers' only power-play goal on five man-advantage attempts at 16:18 of the third as his centering shot deflected off a Miami player's stick and into the net. Harris sealed the game with an empty-netter 1:08 later.
Denver had two goals in the third period overturned, beginning with Chyzowski original tally at 5:59 being reversed due to a coach's challenge for goaltender interference. McMorrow nearly had his second tally with 7:44 left in regulation, as the sequence was initially rulled a goal on the ice but was called back after the on-ice officials reviewed the video and determined the puck didn't entirely cross the goal line.
On the penalty kill, the Pioneers were a perfect 5-for-5, tying a season best. They nullified two RedHawks opportunities in the third period while holding a one-goal lead as they clogged up shooting lanes with several key blocks.
DU's 16 blocked shots in the game were a season high.
UP NEXT: Denver heads to Minnesota for a two-game series at St. Cloud State on Friday and Saturday in their final contests before the holiday break. DU begins its second half at home on Jan 2-3 against Maine.

QUOTABLES
Richard and Kitzia Goodman Hockey Head Coach David Carle
On team resilience: "It was good to the show the resiliency when we had the lead. We have had to do it a few times this year coming from behind. Obviously, three disallowed goals on the weekend, a lot could deter our mindset, but I thought we did a great job sticking with it. Loved our commitment to team defense in the third, we blocked a lot of shots–probably about 7 or 8. They were really big blocks by everybody on the ice. Great to get six points and our first sweep at home of the year."
On blocks throughout the game: "It was great, we will certainly celebrate that in the room and show it on Monday. It's the type of commitment you need with a one goal lead, to be able to close out a game and put away a really desperate team on the other side."
Sophomore Forward Hagen Burrows
On his goal: "It's always a good feeling to get the first goal, as a team and as an individual. It was early in the game, it felt good getting one early, and getting up early."
On Brendan McMorrow's goal that gave DU the lead: "That play speaks for itself. Just an unbelievable individual effort, and I think that really propelled our team going into the third there to come out with a win tonight."
On keeping composure and not succumbing to opponents' level: "We knew coming into this game that they would want to bounce back from yesterday and that they'd come a lot faster and more physically. So we talked about keeping an even head and just playing the game and continuing to play our game."
On their perfect penalty kill: "Throughout the season our kill has been one of the best parts of our team. I don't know the exact stats, but one of the top in the nation, so we have a lot of confidence. Obviously you don't want to take penalties, but when we do we have the personnel and the coaching to feel good killing [the penalty]."
