DENVER – Two University of Denver hockey freshmen earned weekly awards from the National Collegiate Hockey Conference on Tuesday as
Quentin Miller was named Goaltender of the Week and
Kyle Chyzowski earned Rookie of the Week honors.
The Denver duo helped the team to a weekend sweep of the then-No. 19-ranked Miami RedHawks, winning 4-0 on Friday and 5-2 on Saturday. It was the Pioneers' first home sweep of the season stretched their record to 8-2-0 in their last 10 games, with both defeats coming in overtime.
Miller registered his third shutout of the season on Friday by stopping all 22 shots faced before making 22-of-24 saves in Saturday's series finale. On the weekend, he posted a combined 1.02 goals-against average and .957 save percentage.
The Montreal, Quebec, native has started in 14 straight games for DU and hasn't lost in regulation in 11 consecutive contests with eight wins and three overtime loses in that time. On the season, he owns a 10-4-1 record, 1.84 goals against average and .931 save percentage in 15 starts.
This is Miller's third weekly honor from the NCHC and second goalie award this season. He was recognized as Rookie of the Week on Nov. 11 and picked up his first Goaltender of the Week accolade on Nov. 18.
Chyzowski earned his first career weekly award from the NCHC after scoring in both games against Miami. It is the first time in his career that he's tallied in consecutive outings and the second time he's picked up points in back-to-back contests. The freshman also combined for four shots, a plus-1 rating and won 50-percent of his faceoffs (7-of-14) in the series versus the RedHawks.
In 17 games this season, the Surrey, British Columbia, native has totaled eight points (three goals and five assists) and has recorded four points on three goals and one assist in the past five outings.
Western Michigan's William Whitelaw was named the conference's Forward of the Week, and North Dakota's Jake Livanavage was chosen as Defenseman of the Week. Denver's
Eric Pohlkamp was a finalist for the NCHC's D-man of the week.
UP NEXT: Denver wraps up its first half of its season with a road series at St. Cloud State on Friday and Saturday. It will be the team's final games before going on a two-week holiday break.
