Senior
Carter King and
Aidan Thompson each reached 100 career points, and sophomore defenseman
Garrett Brown scored his first career goal. Freshmen
Jake Fisher and
James Reeder opened the scoring with markers each in the first period for Denver (22-8-1, 11-7-1 NCHC), while forward
Jack Devine and King also buried the puck.
"It wasn't the cleanest game, but I thought it was well done by our guys," said
Denver Richard and Kitzia Goodman Hockey Head Coach David Carle. "I thought they started the first (period) well and the second well with a lot of energy. For us, I thought we managed those pushes and when we did have opportunities, we were able to put the puck in the back of the net."
DU led 2-0 after the first period and doubled its lead in the middle frame on tallies from Brown and Devine. Brown's first NCAA goal came unassisted after taking an MU turnover in the neutral zone and firing a wrister short-side on a rush up the ice at 10:42 of the stanza.
Miami (3-24-2, 0-19-0 NCHC) got on the scoreboard with a power-play tally from Colby Ambrosio 1:10 into the third to cut the deficit to 4-1, but Denver answered just 18 seconds later with King's 15th goal and 100th point. Thompson reached the century mark earlier in the contest with the primary assist on Devine's power-play goal at 13:45 of the second.
Devine also added an assist, and Thompson joined him with a multi-point night with two helpers.
The Pioneers outshot the RedHawks 33-19 in the contest, as goaltender
Matt Davis made 18 saves in the victory and the RedHawks' Ethan Dahlmeir ended with 28 stops.
DU finished 2-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
UP NEXT: The Pioneers conclude their weekend series in Miami on Saturday at 4 p.m. MT before starting a three-game homestand next weekend. The game will be broadcast on NCHC.tv.

QUOTABLES
Richard and Kitzia Goodman Hockey Head Coach David Carle
On leading after the first period: "We have been in some of these situations where we've given up goals in the last minute of periods, and it's a little deflating going into the room. For us to get that 2-0 lead going into the first, I'm proud of the guys for executing. I will say credit to them (Miami), they came out in that second period and their foot was firmly on the gas. And we had to weather some of that and get the puck move and get the puck out of our zone efficiently, but I thought we were the better team in the second half of the second period."
On goaltender Matt Davis: "I thought he played very well. He probably had to be at his best for that first power play; he made an unbelievable save on No. 33 (Casper Nassen), but [Johnny] Waldron zipped it to him through the seam and Matty read it, got over there. [Casper Nassen] has got a great one-timer, Bruins draft pick. And the first 10 minutes of the second, I thought he was excellent. Outside of those two moments, I thought he was good when we needed, but he needed to be great at those moments. Great teams need great goaltending at key times."
Senior Forward Carter King
On his goal: "Jack [Devine] was in a good spot, got the turnover and made a nice play to Tomer (
Aidan Thompson), and Tomer made a really nice play through the D-man to find me backdoor."
On reaching 100 career points: "I think its special and it's special that Tomer (
Aidan Thompson), my teammate, getting it as well on the same night I think is really cool. It kind of makes you look back over the last four years that I've been here, and it's been fun journey. It's a really special moment."
Junior Forward Aidan Thompson
On the win: "I think the first period we did really good, had some chance. A little slower in the second period and good in the third. I just think we're trying to get better every period, every game. Playoffs are coming up, so confident in the group right now and looking good."
On what it means to be a Pioneer after recording 100 career points: "Being at this program, I grew up watching this team, so to come here and do special things like winning national championships is pretty cool. That's what we're trying to do again. Milestones are great, but we want to hang banners up in Magness (Arena)."
