DENVER, CO -- The Denver women's basketball team took a one point advantage into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell, 73-68, to the North Dakota Fighting Hawks at home on Saturday.
The Pioneers (8-19, 1-13) had two players score in double figures, led by Angelina Robles, who had 21 points. Jordan Jones added 15 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks and Emma Smith added nine points, six rebounds and five steals.
Denver forced 16 North Dakota turnovers while committing 15 themselves in Saturday's game. The Pioneers turned those takeaways into 16 points on the offensive end of the floor. Smith's five steals led the way for Denver.
How It Happened
After falling behind 19-10, Denver went on an 8-0 run with 3:13 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Robles, to narrow its deficit to 19-18. North Dakota answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Pioneers down 22-20 entering the second quarter.
North Dakota kept adding to that lead, building a 35-26 advantage before Denver went on a 14-0 run, highlighted by a three from Alaisha Brown, to take a 40-35 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. Denver was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 20 points.
After intermission, Denver held on to its advantage and owned a 52-51 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Denver took advantage of four North Dakota turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of takeaways.
North Dakota then erased the Denver lead in the game's final quarter for a 73-68 comeback victory. Denver took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.
