DENVER – The University of Denver hockey team had two players pick up weekly honors from the National Collegiate Hockey Conference on Monday, as junior
Rieger Lorenz was named Forward of the Week and sophomore
Zeev Buium was selected as Defenseman of the Week.
The Denver duo helped the team to a 1-0-1 weekend, as the Pioneers tied Omaha 3-3 on Friday night before winning 11-2 on Saturday. The victory in the series finale marked DU's most goals in a game since 1995 and tied the NCHC record for the most-ever in a league contest.
Lorenz recorded multiple points in both games against the Mavericks, totaling six points (two goals, four assists) and a plus-5 rating. The forward had two assists and three shots on Friday before registering a career-high four points on Saturday with his third career multi-goal game and a pair of helpers as well.
The Calgary, Alberta, native now has three multi-point performances on the season, as he also had two assists on opening night on Oct. 5 at Alaska Anchorage. He has five goals and seven assists in 26 outings this year. This is Lorenz's first Forward of the Week award and his second NCHC honor of his career as he was recognized as Rookie of the Week as a freshman on Oct. 24, 2022.
Buium earned his third NCHC Defenseman of the Week accolade of the campaign and the sixth of his career after a four-point weekend against the Mavericks. He tallied the game-tying goal on Friday to force overtime before blocking two shots and registering three assists on Saturday for his fourth three-point outing of the season and ninth of his career.
The San Deigo, California, native leads all NCAA defensemen with 29 points and his 23 assists are tied for second in the country among all skaters, trailing only teammate
Jack Devine (29). Buium has recorded 18 points (5g/13a) over the last 14 games and has registered at least one point in 18-of-24 contests this season.
