BOZEMAN, Mont. – Coming off a successful Winter World University Games in Italy where he won three medals, graduate student
Loic Chable led the Denver Pioneers ski team on Monday as the alpine season resumed at the Montana State Invitational.
The men's and women's giant slalom at Bridger Bowl Ski Area began a sprint to the finish for the alpiners as they get set for nine races over the next three weeks. The previous alpine events were nearly a month ago at the Denver Invitational on Jan. 6-8.
Chable posted the third-fastest second run time at 44.57 to move up to fourth place after being in 13th in the morning session. His final time was 1:26.51, coming just 11-hundredths of a second off the podium.
Utah took the top two spots on the stand with Johs Braathen Herland earning the win (1:25.85) and Sindre Myklebust coming in second (1:25.94). Westminster's Benjamin Angerer was third (1:26.40).
Junior
Adrian Minde Hunshammer was DU's next highest finisher in 13th and
Pietro Motterlini was the Pioneers' third scorer in 15th.
Senior
Eirik Kveno came in 20th, junior
Christian Soevik was 22nd and senior
Cooper Cornelius placed 25th. Junior
Thomas Hoffman did not finish the first run.
While the men were able to complete both runs, the women were not able to finish their afternoon session.
Conditions on the women's second run deteriorated and made the course too dangerous to continue and was cancelled after the first 22 skiers went in the afternoon. Per RMISA rules, results from the women's first run will be final and the any results from the second will not count.
The men's race was not affected as that course was on a different spot on the trail.
Junior
Nicola Rountree-Williams led the DU women with the ninth-fastest time in run 1. Fellow classmate
Josephine Trueblood posted a season-best in 16th and senior
Sara Rask was 19th. Junior
Mia Hunt was 22nd in the morning descent and freshman
Stella Buchheister came in 24th.
Kaila Lafreniere of Utah was named the winner after having the fastest first run (43.93), while Montana State's Justine Lamontagne (43.97) was second and Colorado's Louison Accambray (44.07) rounded out the women's podium in third.
Denver is in third place in the Montana State Invitational with 452 points after six-of-eight races. Utah held onto the lead with 582 points while CU is second with 466 points.
