DENVER, CO -- The Denver women's basketball team took a 50-47 lead into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell 73-65 to the UMKC Kangaroos at home Wednesday.
The Pioneers (8-15, 1-9) had three players score in double figures, led by Angelina Robles, who had 23 points. Emma Smith tacked on 13 points, four assists and two steals and Emily Counsel chipped in as well with 10 points.
Denver grabbed 35 rebounds in Wednesday's game compared to UMKC's 32, led by Jordan Jones' six boards.
How It Happened
Denver kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 15-12.
Denver kept the Kangaroos from increasing their lead before going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three from Laia Monclova, to take a 19-17 lead. The Pioneers kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 28-26 advantage heading into halftime. Denver forced three UMKC turnovers in the period and turned them into four points.
UMKC then took a 41-39 lead following intermission before Denver went on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Robles, to grab a 46-41 lead with 1:24 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Kangaroos had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Pioneers still entered the fourth quarter with a 50-47 edge. Denver scored seven fast break points in the quarter.
UMKC then erased the Denver lead in the game's final quarter for a 73-65 comeback victory.
