EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Denver men's tennis team (6-3, 0-0 Summit) finished its trip to Oregon with a 1-6 loss to UTSA in a neutral-site match on Saturday.
After dropping the doubles point, DU responded with fight in singles and pushed four of the matches to three sets. Junior
Ryoma Mishiro prevented the UTSA sweep with a win at No. 5 singles, his second singles victory as a Pioneer.
Doubles:
UTSA got off to a quick start by taking the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. DU repeated its doubles lineup from its match at Oregon on Friday, which were shuffled from the start of the season.
Singles:
The first two singles matches to wrap up went to UTSA in straight sets on courts 1 and 6. The remaining four matches all went into third sets, including freshman
Samuel Rovai and graduate student
Connor Robb-Wilcox, who rallied back from being down a set. Robb-Wilcox fought deep into a third set but gave up a late break to lose it, 5-7.
Mishiro earned DU's only point of the day and also did so in a three-set battle in the No. 5 spot. After easing through the first set, 6-1, his opponent battled back for a 6-4 win in the second frame. Mishiro responded with his own 6-4 win, doing so to seal the win in the third.
Up Next:
The University of Denver men's tennis team stays on the road for one more week, traveling to Wichita, Kansas, on February 15-16. DU will first play Boise State in a neutral-site match on Saturday, February 15, before playing at Wichita State on Sunday, February 16.
