HANOVER, N.H. – The University of Denver women's tennis team (7-9, 3-0 Summit) finished its spring break Ivy League road trip with a 4-3 win over Dartmouth on Friday afternoon.
Despite dropping the doubles point for the first time since February 8, the Pioneers responded with a strong performance in singles, especially from the back half of its lineup, to win its non-conference finale.
Dartmouth is coached by former Denver women's tennis player
Camille Verden-Anderson, and Friday's match marked the first time DU has played against Verden-Anderson's team.
Doubles:
DU was unable to win the doubles point for what would have been its 10
th match in a row as Dartmouth claimed the Nos. 1 and 3 matches to go up 1-0 overall. Denver juniors
Claudia Martinez de Velasco and
Louise Wikander did not finish their match but held a 4-3 lead when the point was clinched.
Singles:
Singles play proved to be quite a battle with four of the matches going to third sets. Denver won both of the matches that ended in straight sets and both with just three games lost apiece. Junior
Marley Lambert got back on track in singles with a 6-1 6-2 win at the No. 4 spot, marking her third consecutive victory that saw her lose three or fewer games. Freshman
Natálie Cinková matched Lambert's result to give Denver its first lead of the day, also with just three games lost to win her second singles match in a row and her sixth in the last seven matches played.
Dartmouth leveled the team scoreboard at 2-2 with a win at No. 3 singles in a three-set fight, but Denver junior
Hana Bečirovič Novak joined Lambert and Cinková in the win column and did so in comeback fashion to reclaim a lead for the Pioneers. After dropping the first set, she rallied in the second to win a tiebreak and get to the decider, which she claimed, 6-3. It was her 10
th win of 2025 thus far and her eighth in the last nine matches.
Senior
Andrea Burguete Beltran would then clinch the dual for Denver at 4-2, also winning in three sets. She won the opening frame and then had to reset after dropping the second set, 3-6, by flipping the script with her own 6-3 win to secure the win, her ninth at the No. 1 singles slot this year.
The day's final match came down to a third-set tiebreak at No. 2 singles after Wikander began a rally from a set down to dominate the second set, 6-1. Dartmouth would hang on, though, to win the breaker.
