TULSA, Okla. – The University of Denver men's tennis team (12-6, 2-0 Summit) posted its second straight 6-1 win to begin Summit League play, this time defeating Oral Roberts on the road on Sunday morning.
After dropping the doubles point, Denver responded with a strong singles performance, winning all six matches and doing so without dropping a set.
Doubles:
The match's first point came down to a tiebreak in the third doubles match to wrap up. DU juniors
Ryoma Mishiro and
Raffaello Papajcik got on the board first with a 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot, their fifth win together after their last two matches were not finished.
ORU evened up the doubles battle with a late break for a 7-5 win on the top court, leaving the No. 2 match to decide the point. For the first time in more than a month and for just the fourth time in his collegiate career thus far, freshman
Mark Neyelov entered the lineup and teamed up with senior
Daniel Sancho Arbizu, though the first-time doubles partners went on to drop the match in a tiebreak.
Singles:
Denver's singles squad responded with convincing results up and down the lineup, seeing the Pioneers come out on top on all six courts in straight sets.
Sancho Arbizu earned his 15
th singles match of 2025 with a 6-2 6-3 victory on the top court to start things off for Denver. The senior has won all 15 of those matches in straight sets and has not dropped a set overall since February 8.
Papajcik gave DU its first overall lead of the day with only four games lost at No. 2 singles for his second consecutive singles win. His bagel won in the first set was his first in dual match play this season, and his four games lost became a new season's best.
Graduate student
Connor Robb-Wilcox posted the best result of the day, losing only three total games, equaling his fewest lost in 2025, first accomplished on February 2 against Northern Arizona. His 6-1 in the opening frame was his fifth set of 6-0 or 6-1 in dual matches as well.
Freshman
Samuel Rovai clinched the dual at 4-1 for Denver, breaking late in the first set before sealing the win with a 6-3 second set. The win was his 12
th in dual match play, good enough for second most on the team.
Senior
Rikuto Yamaguchi took a set lead with a win in a first-set tiebreak before easily claiming the second set, 6-1, for DU's fifth singles victory of the day and his fourth straight. It was the second time in 2025 that he won a set by 6-1.
Mishiro secured the clean sweep in singles for DU, winning both of his sets, 7-5, at No. 5 singles. He has now won his last three matches, all in two sets.
