DENVER – The University of Denver women's tennis team (6-7, 3-0 Summit) closed out its 2025 regular-season home slate with its fifth sweep of the season, claiming a 7-0 win in Summit League play against St. Thomas at Denver Tennis Park on Saturday morning.
DU won all nine of the combined singles and doubles matches and did so without dropping a set in singles.
Doubles:
The three doubles matches all went the way of the Pioneers, and all wrapped up with in minutes of each other. DU grabbed 5-2 leads nearly simultaneously on all three courts, and the No. 2 team of juniors
Claudia Martinez de Velasco and
Louise Wikander earned the first win of the day with a hold in the eighth and final game.
Denver's No. 3 duo of junior
Hana Bečirovič Novak and freshman
Natálie Cinková clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win, breaking three times in total including in the last game.
Senior
Andrea Burguete Beltran and junior
Marley Lambert completed the clean sweep of the doubles matches just two points later with another 6-3 victory for DU. In similar fashion to Bečirovič Novak/Cinková, DU's No. 1 team broke for the third time in what would be the final game.
Singles:
Denver followed its doubles performance with a strong showing in singles, winning all 12 sets – five of them in bagels. Leading the way was Wikander at No. 2 singles, who clinched the dual for Denver with a double bagel, marking the second time in her collegiate career that she did not lose a game in a singles match.
Lambert got back on track with a 6-2 6-0 win to take the first singles point of the day. She won the match's first four games before her opponent first held serve. The DU junior won the final two games of the first set as part of an eight-game win streak to close out the match.
In her final regular-season match at Denver Tennis Park, Burguete Beltran nearly matched her doubles partner's scoreline, also winning her first set in 6-2 before finishing with a 6-1 second set. She captured seven of the last eight games in total across the two sets, securing her team best 20
th win on the 2024-25 season.
After Wikander clinched the win at 4-0, freshman Cinková kept things rolling for Denver with her fourth straight win at No. 6 singles. With a dominant 6-1 first set in hand, she found herself in a tighter second set and went down a break at 2-3 before breaking in her next two return games for a 5-3 lead. She was unable to serve out the match but broke for a third straight time to win it in the 10
th game.
Bečirovič Novak's match at No. 5 singles followed a similar pattern with the Denver junior starting with a bagel in the first set before facing a competitive second set. Like Cinková, she came back from a break down in the second to even things up at 3-3. Again, she fell behind but responded with another break back with her opponent serving for the set at 5-3. A couple more traded breaks later, the players found themselves in a tiebreak where Bečirovič Novak raced out to a 4-0 lead and eventually closed it out, 7-2.
The day's final match also featured a bagel first set followed by a tiebreak, both going the way of the Denver player. This time, it was Martinez de Velasco, who finished up her first set before anyone else and looked to be cruising up 5-1 in the second. Momentum swung toward her opponent as the set ended up level at 5-5. Both returners broke in the final two games on the way to the tiebreak, which also proved to be a back-and-forth affair. Things were level at both changeovers before Martinez de Velasco finally gained an edge late for 10-8, saving three set points along the way.
