Denver Women’s Tennis Tops South Dakota

DU moves to 5-0 in Summit League play with 4-3 road win on Friday; can win regular-season title with win at North Dakota on Saturday

VERMILLION, S.D. – The University of Denver women's tennis team (9-9, 5-0 Summit) won its fifth Summit League match of the year in the team's penultimate dual of the 2025 regular season, posting a 4-3 victory at South Dakota on Friday afternoon.

Denver now has the chance to clinch the Summit League regular-season title for the 11th year in a row with a win at North Dakota on Saturday, April 12.

Doubles:
DU eased into play with wins on all three doubles courts. Freshman Natálie Cinková and junior Hana Bečirovič Novak finished first at No. 3 doubles, rallying back from a break down at 1-3 to win five of the final six games on their way to a 6-4 victory.

DU's No. 2 team of juniors Louise Wikander and Claudia Martinez de Velasco clinched the doubles point after trading breaks midway through their match before winning the last three games to take it, 6-3.

Senior Andrea Burguete Beltran and junior Marley Lambert were also able to finish their match for their 20th match together as doubles partners, matching Cinková/Bečirovič Novak's score of 6-4.

Singles:
Wikander cruised through her No. 2 singles match, losing only two total games for one of her best results of 2025. In both sets, she claimed a quick 3-1 lead on her way to matching 6-1 frames.

USD put up its first point of the day after winning No. 5 singles, but Denver reclaimed its two-point lead when Cinková closed out her match on court six, 6-1 7-5. The freshman started by winning the first four games of the match before finding herself in a back-and-forth battle for the second set. A couple late breaks helped her gain control and eventually the win.

Lambert's third consecutive singles win clinched the dual for Denver at 4-1 and did so despite facing break deficits early in both sets. She first rallied back to even terms after going down 0-3 to start the match and saw her opponent serve for the first set, but the DU junior responded with back-to-back breaks of her own to claim it, 7-5. Again, she was down a break to start the second set but won six of seven games on her way to a 6-3 win.

The only match not to wrap up in straight sets was the top singles clash where Burguete Beltran won the opener in a tiebreak but gave up a late break in the second to find herself in a 10-point match tiebreak, which went to her opponent.

South Dakota won the day's final match to draw the overall scoreline to 4-3 for DU, winning a first-set tiebreak and then tacking on a 6-3 second set in the No. 3 singles match.
