No. 65 Denver Men’s Tennis Sweeps Drake, 7-0

DU to close regular season on Sunday at North Dakota to determine Summit League regular-season winner

DENVER – The No. 65-ranked University of Denver men's tennis team (15-6, 4-0 Summit) closed out its regular-season home slate with its first Summit League sweep of the year, topping Drake, 7-0, at Denver Tennis Park on Friday afternoon.

With the win, Denver joins North Dakota top the Summit League table with 4-0 records. The teams will play in the regular-season finale at UND on Sunday, April 13, for the Summit League regular-season championship.

Doubles:
Across the two doubles matches to reach a conclusion, Denver dropped just four combined games. In the top match up, DU graduate student Connor Robb-Wilcox and senior Rikuto Yamaguchi matched their best result as a doubles team with a 6-1 win, breaking twice and not facing a single break points against them.

Senior Daniel Sancho Arbizu and freshman Theo Coats clinched the doubles point at 6-3 in No. 2 singles, winning four of the final five games.

Juniors Ryoma Mishiro and Raffaello Papajcik held a match point at deuce against their opponents' serve but could not convert and ultimately leaving their match unfinished at 5-5.

Singles:
A late break against his serve prevented Sancho Arbizu from a double bagel in No. 1 singles, but he was still able to put up a 6-0 6-1 win for his fewest games lost in singles this year and earn him a 12th consecutive straight-sets win.

Mishiro stayed hot in singles as well, winning his sixth match in a row and also only lost one game for his best result as a Pioneer. Overall, he won the first five games and then closed the match on a seven-game win streak between the two sets.

Papajcik secured the dual in Denver's favor, losing only three games between his two sets in what also his top singles result of the season. He quickly jumped out to 4-0 lead and recovered after surrendering his serve in the fifth game to break right back as part of a three-game win streak to end the first set. He traded breaks to open the second set, going on to win the last six games to seal the win.

At No. 6 singles, Robb-Wilcox started with his own 6-1 set and broke to begin the second set. He was able to hold onto that break lead to win the second set, 6-3, for his sixth consecutive singles victory.

Yamaguchi started with a break in his first return game but ended up back on serve midway through the opening set. He reclaimed the break lead while winning the set's final three games. The second set began on serve with the Denver senior earning the first break to go up 3-2 to start another win streak that ended with him taking the set, 6-2.

Freshman Samuel Rovai ensured DU would not drop a set on the day with his win at No. 4 singles. An early break in the first set was all he would end up needed on his way to a 6-3 set. The script in the second set was flipped with him going down the early break, but he turned things around to level the set at 3-3 and then again at 5-5. A hold at love put the pressure on his opponent in the 11th game, and Rovai capitalized with yet another break to close it out.
