LAST TIME OUT:
Denver's three individual qualifiers helped lead Denver to a third-place finish in the NCAA Regional Final at the Utah Regional – despite being unseeded and not favored to advance out of the NCAA Second Round. During the two-day NCAA Regional competition, Denver upset No. 10-ranked Minnesota and No. 13-ranked Stanford, and tied with No. 4-ranked Utah in the NCAA Second Round.
All individual qualification to the NCAA National Championships is based on performances in the NCAA Second Round. Ulrich booked her trip by way of a third-place finish in the all-around with a career-high 39.575. Casali earned a share of the NCAA Regional vault title with a 9.950 on the event while Mundell tied for second overall with a 9.900 on bars and won a tiebreak procedure to earn the region's qualifying spot on the event.
QUICK HITS:
- Denver has now had at least one gymnast advance to the NCAA National Championships in 24 of the last 25 years that the meet has been held.
- DU's three individual qualifiers are the most by any team this year.
- This will be Casali's second time competing at NCAA Nationals after earning WCGA postseason All-America status on bars when the team qualified in 2023.
- This will be the first time competing at NCAA Nationals for both Mundell and Ulrich.
- Mundell was unable to compete in 2023 due to injury while Ulrich did not join the team until the following season as a freshman.
- Casali, Mundell and Ulrich are the 19th, 20th and 21st Denver gymnasts to qualify as individuals for the NCAA National Championships and the first since Abbie Thompson in 2022, though Thompson was unable to compete due to injury.
NCAA NATIONALS FORMAT:
The NCAA National Championships begins with two semifinal sessions on Thursday, April 17. Denver's three qualifiers will all compete in the Semifinal I at 3:30 p.m. CT/2:30 p.m. MT and will each rotate with one of the qualified teams in the session. Casali and Mundell will rotate with the University of Missouri with Casali competing on vault in rotation two and Mundell competing on bars in rotation three. Ulrich will rotate with the University of Oklahoma, competing at the end of OU's lineup in each rotation.
All individual national titles are awarded based on combined results from both of Thursday's semifinal sessions. An awards ceremony recognizing the top eight finishers – including the NCAA champions – on each event and in the all-around will be held following the completion of the second semifinal.
WCGA postseason All-America honorees are also determined based on Thursday's semifinals. The top eight finishers within each semifinal, including ties, will earn the awards as given by the coaches' association.
SCOUTING THE FIELD:
Casali, Mundell and Ulrich will compete against some of the biggest names in the sport for national titles and All-America honors.
In the all-around, Ulrich joins three other individual qualifiers, led by Oregon State's Jade Carey, who is the No. 1 all-arounder in the country. Arkansas' Joscelyn Roberson advanced out of the Penn State Regional and was an alternate for Team USA at last year's Olympic Games. Washington's Mary McDonough earned the spot out of her home regional and did so as an individual qualifier into NCAA Regionals.
Ulrich will rotate with two more of the top all-arounders in the country in OU's Jordan Bowers and Faith Torrez. The two Sooners are also tied with Florida's Leanne Wong for No. 2 in the national all-around rankings.
On vault, Casali is one of four individual qualifiers on the event, joining Georgia's Ady Wahl (ranked No. 48), North Carolina's Kaya Forbes (also ranked No. 48) and Michigan's Sophia Diaz (ranked No. 76). The top three vaulters in the country in Florida's Selena Harris-Miranda, LSU's Kailin Chio and Oklahoma's Torrez will also compete in Thursday's semifinals.
On bars, Mundell joins fellow individual qualifiers Madelyn Williams from California (ranked No. 4), Maddie Jones from Arkansas (ranked No. 25) and Olivia Greaves from Auburn (ranked No. 60). Among other contenders for the bars title are Oklahoma's Audrey Davis, Utah's Grace McCallum and Florida's Wong, who all rank in the top three nationally.
