DENVER – University of Denver hockey senior
Matt Davis was named on Wednesday the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Goaltender of the Month for March and April 2025.
This is Davis' second career monthly honor from the NCHC, as he was named Goaltender of the Month in March 2024. He was also later named the National Goalie of the Month in March 2024 and Player of the Month in April 2024.
Davis helped backstop the Pioneers to their second-straight NCAA Frozen Four appearance as he played in all 11 games in March and April, posting a 7-4-0 record. He led the NCHC with a .930 save percentage and 318 saves in March/April, while averaging 28.91 saves per game—second among NCHC netminders with at least four games played. He was also second in the league with a 2.12 goals-against average.
The Calgary, Alberta, native recorded a pair of 40-save efforts during the 2025 postseason. He made 46-of-50 saves in a double-overtime loss to Western Michigan in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff Championship on March 22 and stopped 44-of-47 shots in another two-OT loss in the national semifinals last Thursday against WMU, which went on to win its first NCAA Championship over the weekend. The Denver goalie made 40 or more saves four times during the campaign.
Davis allowed two goals or fewer in seven of the outings over the past month, including allowing just one goal each in wins against Providence and Boston College on March 28-30 in Manchester, New Hampshire to earn NCAA Northeast Regional All-Tournament Team honors. Providence's goal against in the third period ended Davis' NCAA Tournament shutout streak at 175:38 that began in the first period of the 2024 Frozen Four semifinals against Boston University. He also had a stretch of 106:32 of perfect hockey against BC that stretched across three games, beginning on Oct. 21, 2023.
Overall, Davis finished the 2024-25 season with a 29-10-1 record, .924 save percentage, 2.07 goals-against average and one shutout in 2024-25. He made 997 saves during the year, tied for the ninth-most in a campaign in school history, while minding 2,374:35 in the Pioneers' net. The keeper posted career bests in games played and wins, with his 40 starts tying for the most in a single season in program history (fourth goalie) and his 29 victories leading the NCAA and marking the second-most all-time at the school; only George Kirkwood has had more with 30 wins in 1960-61.
Davis was joined by a pair of Western Michigan Broncos in the final NCHC monthly awards, as Tim Washe was named Player of the Month and goaltender Hampton Slukynsky was recognized as Rookie of the Month.
All three NCHC honorees are now eligible for Hockey Commissioners' Association (HCA) March/April national monthly awards, which will be announced on Thursday.
