Denver Women’s Tennis Wins 11th Summit League Title

No. 1 seed DU defeats No. 3 seed Omaha, 4-0, in Saturday’s final

DENVER – The University of Denver women's tennis team (12-9, 6-0 Summit) captured its 11th consecutive Summit League tournament title with a 4-0 sweep of Omaha at Denver Tennis Park on Saturday afternoon.

No. 1-seeded Denver eased through doubles before winning three straight-sets singles matches to earn the 4-0 win over No. 3-seeded Omaha.

DU has now won the Summit League title in each of the 11 years that the tournament has been held since Denver joined the league in 2013.

Doubles:
In less than half and hour, and with only two games lost in the two completed matches, Denver took a 1-0 overall lead off of the doubles point. Juniors Claudia Martinez de Velasco and Louise Wikander earned the first of two 6-1 Denver wins, taking a commanding 5-0 advantage and then breaking once more in what would be the seventh and final game.

Senior Andrea Burguete Beltran and junior Marley Lambert secured the point with their own 6-1 win at the top court and doing so with a similar start as Martinez de Velasco/Wikander. They, too, won the first four games and extended to a 5-1 lead before breaking yet again in the final game.

At No. 3 doubles, DU's team of junior Hana Bečirovič Novak and freshman Natálie Cinková held a 4-3 lead but did not finish the match.

Singles:
Denver started singles play with wins on the top two courts, beginning with a convincing performance from Burguete Beltran in the No. 1 spot. Back-to-back breaks midway through the first set lifted her to an eventual 6-2 lead, and she seized on the momentum with five consecutive games won to start the second set. After a small hiccup when serving for it up, 5-1, she locked back in on return and broke in the next game to claim the win.

A couple minutes later, Wikander put DU within a point of the title, also winning in straight sets. Like Burguete Beltran, she took control of the opening set with consecutive breaks in the middle and ultimately served it out at 6-1. She exchanged breaks at the start of the second set but went up a break lead late for 5-3. After answering a hold from her opponent with her own hold at love, she had the match in hand.

Bečirovič Novak secured the trophy for Denver at No. 5 singles, winning moments after Wikander. With two breaks in her first two return games, she went on to claim a 6-3 first set but had to fight back in the second frame. Down 1-3, she began her comeback and made it to 4-4. After a relatively easy hold on her serve, she put pressure on her opponent and got the break at 40-15, winning the match and clinching the title for DU.

The remaining three singles courts were becoming closer battles, though none finished up play. Lambert and Cinková both led by a set-to-none while Martinez de Velasco lost her opening set.
