DENVER – Goaltender
Matt Davis of the University of Denver hockey team signed on Tuesday a one-year contract beginning in 2025-26 with the San Jose Barracuda.
Davis, 23, registered a 29-10-1 record, .924 save percentage, 2.07 goals-against average and one shutout in 2024-25. He made 997 saves during the year, tied for the ninth-most in a campaign in school history, while minding 2,374 minutes and 35 seconds in the Pioneers' net. He posted career bests in games played and wins, with his 40 starts tying for the most in a single season in program history (fourth goalie) and his 29 victories leading the NCAA and marking the second-most all-time at the school; only George Kirkwood has had more with 30 wins in 1960-61.
His first 11 starts of the season resulted in victories for the Pioneers (Oct. 5-Nov. 16), tying the record for the longest in-season win streak in the last 10 years by a Denver goaltender as Tanner Jaillet also accomplished it from Jan. 21-March 10, 2017. Davis recorded a career-long shutout streak across three contests in the season from Oct. 26-Nov. 8, going 154:45 without allowing a goal in games against Wisconsin, Yale and Lindenwood. That was his third shutout streak of at least 120 minutes of his career and is the eighth longest in program history, just behind Glenn Fisher's 158:03 shutout run in the 2001-02 season.
A 2025 Richter Award Semifinalist as college hockey's top goaltender, Davis made 40 or more saves four times this past year. He posted career highs with 49 saves on 55 shots in an overtime outing at Arizona State on Feb. 8 and made 44 stops at No. 7 Maine on Jan. 4—his most in a regulation contest of his collegiate tenure. Davis also stopped 46 shots on March 22 in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff Championship Game and 44 on April 10 in the NCAA Frozen Four Semifinals versus Western Michigan, with both contests going to double-overtime.
The Calgary, Alberta, native was selected to the NCAA Northeast Regional All-Tournament Team for the second year in a row after making 65-of-67 saves in wins against No. 2 Providence and No. 1 Boston College on March 28-30 in Manchester, New Hampshire. Davis had an NCAA Tournament shutout streak of 175:38 minutes that stretched from the first period of the 2024 Frozen Four semifinals against Boston University to the third period versus Providence. He also had a 106:32 shutout streak of the BC Eagles across three games, beginning on Oct. 21, 2023 in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
Overall, he allowed one goal or fewer in six of his seven career NCAA Tournament starts, posting a 6-1 record, 0.99 goals-against average, .969 save percentage and one shutout, which came in the NCAA Championship Game versus Boston College on April 13, 2024 and helped him earn 2024 Frozen Four Most Outstanding Player honors.
Davis appeared in 90 total games and made 83 starts during his time at Denver. He finishes his collegiate career tied for fifth in program history with 63 wins, ninth in save percentage (.921), fifth in goals-against average (2.13) and 13th in shutouts (five). He posted a .783 winning percentage as the Pioneers' starting netminder and also added four assists during his four years on the DU hilltop.
The right-catching keeper won 20 consecutive starts across two seasons from March 9-Nov. 14, 2014, which included three career-long shutout streaks in that time. Overall, Davis started 33 straight games from Jan. 5-Nov. 1, 2024, registering a 27-4-2 record, 2.02 goals-against average, .927 save percentage and three shutouts during that stretch.
Davis was recognized as the NCHC Goaltender of the Week five times in his career, including three such honors this past season (Nov. 11, Jan. 6, March 10). He was twice named NCHC Goaltender of the Month in March 2024 and March/April 2025 and was named National Goaltender of the Month for March 2024 and National Player of the Month for April 2024 following his 2023-24 postseason performance.
He backstopped the Pioneers to back-to-back Frozen Four appearances in 2024 and 2025 and helped the program win its NCAA-record 10th national championship in 2024. That was his second national title after being a member of the 2022 team, making him one of 65 Denver players to be a part of multiple national championship squads.
Davis stepped into the role of starting goaltender for the 2023-24 campaign after serving as a backup for
Magnus Chrona for his first two years and was named the Bill Masterton Award winner as the team's most valuable player. He started in 31 contests as a junior, posting a 23-5-3 record with a .917 save percentage average, 2.34 goals-against average, three shutouts and three assists in his first year as a starter. His 35-save shutout in the national title game marked just the eighth clean sheet by a goalie in the championship contest in NCAA history and the third DU Pioneer to accomplish the feat.
As a freshman in 2021-22, Davis appeared in six games and made four starts, registering a 3-1-0 record, 1.97 goals-against average, .923 save percentage and won his first of two national championships. After making his debut in the third period on Oct. 8, 2021 against Arizona State, he made his first start the following weekend against Air Force on Oct. 16, 2021 and recorded a 25-save shutout on home ice against the Falcons. In his sophomore campaign, he posted an 8-1-0 record while appearing in 13 games throughout the season, including both NCHC Quarterfinal playoff games against Miami. Davis finished 2022-23 with a 1.77 goals-against average and .925 save percentage—the best marks of his career.
Academically, the Davis was named to the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team and an NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete in each of his four seasons and has been named a National AHCA All-American Scholar the past three years (2024-25 to be announced later this summer). Selected to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team as a junior in 2023-24, Davis was recognized last month with the 2024-25 NCHC Senior Scholar-Athlete Award, becoming DU's second-ever honoree and first since
Gabe Levin in 2016.
Davis was part of the winningest senior class in Denver hockey history that won 124 games over four seasons, two Penrose Cups as NCHC regular-season champions, the 2024 NCHC Frozen Faceoff Championship, four Gold Pan trophies over rival Colorado College, reached three NCAA Frozen Fours and earned national championships in 2022 and 2024.
A college free agent, Davis joined the Pioneers after spending 2020-21 with the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League. He also played two years of Junior-A hockey in his native Canada with the Spruce Grove Saints of the Alberta Junior Hockey League from 2018-2020 before heading to the U.S.
