Denver, CO (April 22, 2025) In honor of Earth Day, Denver Athletics and Ritchie Center Operations proudly spotlights its continued commitment to sustainability through its growing relationship with SOLON Corporation, a leader in renewable energy solutions. The relationship, which began in 2020 and continued into 2025 with a major solar installation at Daniel L. Ritchie Center for Sports & Wellness, builds on the earlier work across the university's campus and marks a significant step forward in integrating clean energy for the multiple athletic venues. Earlier this year, Denver Athletics was proud to welcome SOLON as a Corporate Partner.
In total, 8,485 solar modules now power DU facilities—including 18 campus buildings and the newly expanded Ritchie Center—supporting the University's long-term environmental goals. These installations combine to generate 3.3 megawatts (MW) of clean energy and are projected to produce over 113 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) over the next 25 years.
"SOLON Corporation is an example of how a sustainable service can evolve into partnership to benefit our athletic programs while showcasing innovative and environmental responsibility in alignment with the mission of the university," said
Angel Field, Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Operations and Service. "The Ritchie Center has a broad footprint that now displays solar panels for a more sustainable future, thanks to our partners at SOLON."
The solar system expansion at the Ritchie Center in 2024 added 1.16 MW to the campus grid—complementing SOLON's original 2020 deployment of 2.12 MW across DU's rooftops. Beyond energy savings, the environmental impact of this initiative is significant. Over 25 years, the clean energy produced is equivalent to:
- Removing 17,773 gas-powered vehicles from the road for one year
- Avoiding the burning of 84.6 million pounds of coal
- The carbon sequestration of 1.26 million tree seedlings grown for 10 years
"Working with the University of Denver and Denver Athletics has been an incredible opportunity to demonstrate the real-world impact of solar energy," said Brian Seibel, President at SOLON Corporation. "We're honored to help power one of the nation's premier athletic facilities while advancing DU's clean energy goals, and excited to support Denver Athletics through our Corporate Partnership."
As part of the partnership, SOLON has a visible presence in the university's Magness Arena, home of DU's ice hockey program, reinforcing its commitment to the DU community and collegiate athletics.
