MILWAUKEE – The [RV/RV] University of Denver men's lacrosse team fell to Marquette 18-11 on Friday night at Valley Fields.
Postgame Notes:
Denver's 2025 season comes to a close at 7-7.
Cody Malawsky finished with five points on three goals and two assists.
Malawsky completed his third hat trick of the season and the fifth of his career.
Joshua Carlson finished with four points on two goals and two assists.
The multi-goal game was Carlson's second of the season.
How It Happened:
First Quarter:
Denver opened the game strong, scoring three goals on its first three possessions in the opening 5:19 to take the early lead. After a couple of resets,
Cody Malawsky got his 16
th of the year on an inside roll to open the scoring in the Valley. A little less than a minute later,
Marek Tzagournis hit
Joe Taraboletti for his fifth of the campaign to make it 2-0. After its first faceoff win of the night,
Joshua Carlson got topside 12-yards out and buried his ninth of the year to make it 3-0.
Marquette ended the quarter on a 5-1 run. The Golden Eagles first two goals came off back-to-back faceoff wins eight seconds apart to make it 3-2 with 9:17 to go. Tzagournis finished a Malawsky feed for the only goal in the middle of Marquette's five-goal spurt. A pair of Marquette man-up goals and the Golden Eagles first six-on-six goal of the night made it 5-4 Golden Eagles at the end of the first.
Second Quarter:
Malawsky opened the second-quarter scoring to tie the game at 5-5 with 10:26 to go, but Marquette scored three-straight in less than four minutes to take an 8-5 lead into the locker room.
Third Quarter:
Marquette scored four of the first five goals in the third. The Golden Eagles got the first two before Malawsky completed his hat trick with 10:34 to go in the third to make it a 10-6 game. Marquette got goals with 7:27 and 6:36 to go on the clock to make it a 12-6 game.
Tortolani broke an eight-minute drought to make it 12-7 with 2:35 to go in the frame and then fed Carlson on the next possession to make it a 12-8 game heading into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter:
Carlson fed Manning in the slot to begin the fourth quarter, and the senior buried his 30
th of the season to make it a 12-9 game with 13:44 to go. The Pioneers couldn't convert on their first man-up chance of the night, but the Golden Eagles did on the other end to push their lead back to four with under eight minutes to play.
Manning got his second of the quarter to cut the deficit back down to three, but Marquette scored the next five and went on to win by seven to qualify for next week's BIG EAST Tournament.
