Denver Women’s Soccer Plays to Scoreless Draw at Colorado College

DU leads match in shots, corners but finishes opening weekend with a 0-0 tie

Colorado Springs, Colo. – The University of Denver women's soccer team (1-0-1, 0-0-0 Summit) finished opening weekend with a 0-0 draw at Colorado College on Sunday afternoon.

Denver led time of possession and in most offensive statistics but was unable to find the back of the net. Goalkeeper Alina Santos added three more saves to start the year in helping prevent a goal for the Tigers while DU's sturdy defense limited CC's chances in and around the box.

SIGNIFICANT STATS:
  • Denver finished ahead in both shot attempts (15-10) and shots on target (7-3).
  • The Pioneers' backline held the Tigers to just a single corner kick in the match.
  • Five different Denver players shared the team lead with five shot attempts including redshirt sophomore Kera Nguyen, who put both on target for the most shots on goal for either team.
  • Redshirt sophomores Rowan LaPiano and Kit Mooney both made their official collegiate debuts, Mooney as a starter and LaPiano as a first-half sub.
  • Redshirt sophomore Luci Vincent made the second start of her career and joined redshirt junior Emma Thielbahr, freshman Annie Philbin and Santos in playing the full 90 minutes.
FIRST HALF:
17' | Redshirt senior Samantha Dreiling had Denver's first quality look at the net but pushed it wide of the post.

21' | From distance, CC put a shot right toward the center of the net, but Santos was able to leap up and tip it clear.

29' | Senior Isabella Chidiac took Denver's second corner kick of the match and placed it perfectly toward redshirt junior Hannah Tate, whose header bounced off the post.

SECOND HALF:
63' & 74' | On consecutive corners, senior Brooke Ahern connected with the service but saw her headers float wide both times.

76' | Freshman Kacey Harvey carried the ball in from the Denver half and took a shot from 25 yards back only to see the ball finish narrowly above the crossbar.

86' | CC earned a dangerous free kick to the side of the 18-yard box and placed the ball near the penalty spot where Tate successfully headed it clear of the DU goal.

WHAT'S NEXT:
Denver heads to Missoula, Montana, for the Rumble in the Rockies, hosted by the University of Montana. DU will begin the weekend with a neutral-site match against Baylor on Thursday, August 21, at 3 p.m. MT.
