DU hosts Southern Utah in first match of another Denver Soccer doubleheader

WHO: Denver (1-0-3, 0-0-0 Summit) vs. Southern Utah (0-2-2, 0-0-0 WAC)
WHAT: Denver's second home match of 2025
WHERE: University of Denver Soccer Stadium (Denver, Colorado)
WHEN: Sunday, August 31, at 12 p.m. MT

MATCH PROMOTIONS
Sunday is the second of three doubleheaders for the Denver men's and women's soccer teams. The No. 6-ranked DU men will take to the pitch after the conclusion of the women's match, hosting SIUE at 3 p.m. MT.

Sunday is also Youth Day at University of Denver Soccer Stadium. Youth ages 12 and younger who wear their favorite soccer kit – youth club, professional team, etc. – receive free admission with the purchase of an adult ticket and are invited to take part in a halftime parade on the pitch. Tickets are available for purchase online.

LAST TIME OUT:
Denver was just 2:36 away from earning a 1-0 win against Texas A&M on Thursday, August 28, but the match was declared a no contest following a weather delay in the 68th minute. Because the match had not reached 70 completed minutes and did not resume play within the allotted time as dictate by the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Soccer Rule Book, a no contest was called. No team result will be decided, and all statistics from the match are now void.

DU claimed the initial lead in the 10th minute with a converted penalty kick from redshirt senior Samantha Dreiling in the 10th minute, and Texas A&M had gone down to 10 women just minutes before the weather delay in the 60th minute. At 67:24 on the clock, play was suspended due to lightning.

QUICK HITS:
  • Redshirt junior goalkeeper Alina Santos was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Women's Team of the Week following her performances against Baylor and Seattle. She finished with 13 total saves including a career high-tying eight against Baylor.
  • DU is one win away from its 100th at University of Denver Soccer Stadium, which opened ahead of the 2009 season.
  • Denver is unbeaten through the first four completed matches of the season for the second time in the last three seasons.
    • DU went 4-0-4 in 2023 before its first loss.
  • Thursday's match against Texas A&M is believed to be the first no contest in at least DU's Division I history.
  • Southern Utah is the fourth consecutive opponent that, at the start of the season, Denver had only played against once previously.

SCOUTING THE THUNDERBIRDS:
This will be just the second meeting between Denver and Southern Utah. The teams' only other match came on September 8, 2024, when DU posted a 5-2 win at SUU. Each team scored once in the first 13 minutes before DU rattled off three consecutive goals to claim a 4-1 lead in the 66th minute. SUU pulled one back just seconds later, but Denver reclaimed a three-goal lead in the 85th off a corner.

Southern Utah is spending the weekend in the state of Colorado and played to 1-1 draw at Northern Colorado on Thursday, August 28. After conceding in the 12th minute, SUU's Aubrie Labno equalized off a penalty kick in the 54th minute.

Labno is joined by teammates Avery Kyle and Carly Radke in finding the back of the net so far this season, and three more Thunderbirds have an assist each. Jazmyn Brass was named WAC Goalkeeper of the Week after making seven saves against Boise State last week.

UP NEXT:
Denver heads south for its final two non-conference road matches against the first two of three consecutive Power-Four opponents. DU will first play at Arizona on Thursday, September 4, before heading to Arizona State on Sunday, September 7.
