DU Women’s Soccer Drops Match Against Colorado

Denver refocuses after allowing two early goals, finishes with 0-2 loss on Thursday night

DENVER – The University of Denver women's soccer team (2-3-3, 0-0-0 Summit) allowed two quick goals to start Thursday night's match against Colorado and was unable to find the back of the net, finishing with a 0-2 loss to the Pioneers' in-state rival.

CU scored twice in the first eight minute, but Denver recovered to hold the Buffs without any goals for the final 82 minutes – despite facing 12 shots in the second half alone.

SIGNIFICANT STATS:
  • Denver welcomed a crowd of 1,660, which became the fourth largest in program history – and the third largest for a non-doubleheader with DU's men's squad.
    • Including Denver men's soccer matches, Thursday's attendance was the ninth highest in University of Denver Soccer Stadium history.
    • It was also the seventh highest regular-season attendance mark at the venue for both the men's and women's teams combined and the fifth highest for a non-doubleheader.
  • Redshirt junior Alina Santos extended her streak of matches with at least five saves to six with exactly five saves against CU.
  • Redshirt freshman Rowan LaPiano made the first start of her collegiate career and played a career-best 85 minutes.
    • Freshman Kacey Harvey made her second appearance in the starting XI as well.
  • Redshirt junior Hannah Tate made her return to the lineup and played the full 90 minutes after missing four matches with a minor injury.
  • For the first time in her career, redshirt senior Samantha Dreiling played the full 90 minutes.
  • For the fourth time through the first eight matches, senior Brooke Ahern had the solo team lead in shot attempts with two on Thursday night.
FIRST HALF:
4' | After redshirt junior Emma Thielbahr blocked an initial shot from CU's Emerson Layne, Jace Holley one-touched the ball past Santos for the opening goal.

8' | Senior Isabella Chidiac headed away a CU corner kick, but Vivi Zacarias settled the balls and curled it inside the post and just out of Santos' hands to give the Buffs a 2-0 lead.

11' | Colorado was called for a handball inside the 18-yard box, and Denver was awarded a penalty kick. Following a video review, the call was overturned.

41' | S. Dreiling sent a free kick nicely toward the penalty spot, only to see it bounced around between players from both teams without DU getting a clean look.

SECOND HALF:
51' | CU earned a free kick just outside the box and sent it right at the center of the net, straight into Santos' hands.

70' | Colorado took a look after a blocked shot by the Pios and got the second attempt on target with pace, though Santos' quick hands kept the ball clear.

76' | LaPiano began an attack down the right side of the pitch and fed Lund toward the box, but the freshman's service was out of range of S. Dreiling.

78' | Chidiac took a free kick from 25 yard out, though the ball fell into a scramble between both teams and did not result in a shot.

82' | LaPiano fed Ahern nicely at the edge of the 18-yard box, and the senior got a shot off toward the net but sent it high.
