Denver Ends Road Trip with Loss to Seattle

The Pioneers return home for Alumni Weekend on Saturday against Kansas City at 7 p.m. MT

SEATTLE – The University of Denver men's soccer team fell to Seattle 3-0 on Monday night at Championship Field.

Scoring Summary:
Denver:
Seattle:
Brunell 4' (Stewar, Zuluaga), Fong 14' (Hammond), Wiskel 90' (Zuluaga)

First Half:
4' Seattle's opening goal came on its first shot of the match after Yeider Zuluaga and River Stewart combined in the center of the park and got it to Cooper Brunell. Brunell took a couple touches by one Denver defender and got a shot off into the top-right corner of the frame for the opening goal.
6' Luke Schultz took Denver's first shot attempt of the night, but it was blocked by a Seattle defender in-front and the Redhawks cleared the danger.
14' Seattle's second came on the counterattack when Aidan Fong had a hit from the right side of the field outside the box from 25-yards out. Fong's shot crept just under the crossbar to double the home side's advantage.
22' Denver earned a free kick 35-yards out. Kyle McGowan over-cooked a free-kick service out in the center of the goal, and the Seattle keeper came out and controlled it comfortably.
27' After Chris Carroll had a header in the box half-cleared to the edge of the box, McGowan was the first to the bouncing ball, but couldn't get on top of his strike and it went over the bar.
45' Denver's best chance of the half came on a cross from the right by Dylan Akau that found the run of McGowan at the penalty spot, but McGowan couldn't get enough on his running header, and it bounced once right into the keeper's chest.

Second Half:
54' Luke Hammond had the first real chance of the second half for Seattle, but Isaac Nehme made his first save of the night, pushing it out for a corner.
60' David Biggers played a free kick from the left wing into the area. Tyler Schommer went down in the area, but it was ruled as a foul on Denver, and was not reviewed.
62' Ismael Yeo nearly made it three when his shot rattled the bar, and the Pios defense was able to clear.
62' Denver attempted to strike on the counter, but it was McGowan again who couldn't get past the keeper to cut the deficit in half.
77' Nehme saved a shot comfortably from outside the box, before forward Andre Philibbosian crashed into the Denver keeper. He was shown red initially and the play was upheld after video review.
80' The first opportunity for Denver after gaining the man-advantage fell to the feet of Will King off a headed ball back to the penalty spot by Akau. King couldn't get his body totally around the ball, and his shot rose over the crossbar.
84' McGowan's sixth shot of the night came off a cross from the Denver left, but the side-footed flick rose over the crossbar.
88' Denver was awarded a penalty with 2:52 to play in regulation, but Jake Smith missed it high from the spot.
90' As Denver pressed for its first goal of the day, Seattle struck on the counter, when Nico Wiskel finished a 2-on-1 off a feed from Yeider Zuluaga to cap off the scoring Monday night.
