Johnson Leads the Way in Victory over Kansas City

DENVER -- The Denver Pioneers defeated the Kansas City Roos (25-10, 25-22, 23-25, 25-14) on Saturday afternoon in Hamilton Gymnasium. With the win, the Pioneers move to 10-3 and 2-0 in Summit League play.

Jamia Johnson led the offense with a career-high 17 kills and .433 hitting percentage. Genevieve Lewis added 11 kills and Ava Reynolds tacked on 10. Defensively, Maddie Winkler made 12 digs and Izzy Rawlings chipped in 9. Rawlings led the team with 29 assists and Ilayda Erem added 24 helpers. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
Denver jumped out to an early 5-1 lead to start the match off a pair of kills by Elise Hart. A balanced Pioneers attack extended the lead to 15-7. Hart, Lewis and Johnson each earned a trio of kills at the halfway mark of the first stanza. DU extended the lead to 18-8 en route to securing the 25-10 set one win.
 
SET 2
The Pioneers and the Roos traded kills to start the second set before Kansas City pulled ahead to take a 13-8 lead. Denver rallied late with a 4-1 run to tie the match at 19. The Pioneers were able to complete the comeback to win set two, 25-22.
 
SET 3
Kansas City took an early 8-5 lead to start set three. Denver was able to pull within one before the Roos made back-to-back blocks on a 4-0 run and extended their lead back to 14-9. The Pioneers once again rallied late after being down 21-13 to tie it up at 23 but dropped the set, 25-23.
 
SET 4
Denver jumped out to an early 5-1 lead off of three kills and a block by Johnson. The Pioneers kept the offensive momentum rolling with, extending the lead to 16-9 before Johnson notched her career-best 17th kill to win the third set and the match.
