DU Women’s Soccer Set for Non-Conference Road Finale at ASU

Dener travels to Tempe on Sunday morning for season’s fourth Power-Four match up

WHO: Denver (2-1-3, 0-0-0 Summit) at Arizona State (5-0-1, 0-0-0 Big 12)
WHAT: DU's final non-conference road match
WHERE: Sun Devil Soccer Stadium (Tempe, Arizona)
WHEN: Sunday, September 7, at 10 a.m. MST (Arizona time)/11 a.m. MDT (Denver time)

LAST TIME OUT:
Despite trailing at halftime for the first time this season, Denver came out fighting in the second half at Arizona on Thursday night but ultimately came up short, 1-2.

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute before extending the lead to two off a converted penalty kick in the 78th minute. DU continued its second-half battle, pulling one back in the 85th from a set piece off the foot of senior Lily O'Grady and into the back of the net off freshman Annie Philbin 's header.

QUICK HITS:
  • Philbin became the seventh Pioneer to find the back of the net in Thursday's match.
    • Of those seven goal scorers, more than half were not on the Denver roster last season.
    • Only two of the seven had scored for Denver before the start of the season.
  • Of the 11 Denver players to register at least one point so far in 2025, eight had not done so as a Pioneer entering the season.
  • Philbin's goal at Arizona was Denver's third from a set piece this year, already just one off last season's pace of four (from 34 total goals).
    • Before Philbin's goal, Denver's last goal from a free kick was October 5, 2024, at Oral Roberts.
  • Sunday's match is the middle of three consecutive against opponents from the Big 12 Conference. DU is coming off a narrow 1-2 loss at Arizona on Thursday and will host Colorado on Thursday, September 11.
SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS:
This will be the fifth meeting between Denver and Arizona State with the teams splitting results, 1-1-2, over the first four meetings. They last faced each other on August 28, 2022, in Denver in what would be the second of two 1-1 draws in their head-to-head history. DU's only trip to ASU came on September 4, 2016, when the Pioneers came away with a 3-1 win.

Arizona State claimed a 1-0 win at home over Pepperdine on Thursday, September 4, with Tatum Thomason's 28th minute goal – her team-best third of the year. Goalkeeper Pauline Nelles posted her fourth clean sheet in six starts.

Thomason shares the ASU lead in points so far with Cameron Valladares, each with seven. Valladares is one of two Sun Devils with multiple assists on the year, leading the way with five.

UP NEXT:
Denver returns home next week for its final two non-conference matches and will host in-state rivals Colorado and Colorado State on September 11 and 14, respectively. Kickoff against CU is set for 7 p.m. MT on the 11th while DU and CSU will play in the first match of a Denver Soccer doubleheader at 12 p.m. on the 14th.
