DENVER – The Denver Pioneers ski team heads to Lake Tahoe and begins four days of alpine events on Saturday at Mount Rose-Ski Tahoe with the return of the Nevada Invitational.
This University of Nevada Wolfpack are hosting their first collegiate meet since 2010, the final year before the program went dormant for more than a decade. UN is in its fourth season back on the RMISA circuit after the alpine squad returned in 2023.
In addition to the slalom and giant slalom events for the Nevada Invite, Denver and the other RMISA squads will take part in two individual qualifier races in each discipline, giving the athletes additional opportunities to earn points and qualify for this year's NCAA Championships in March.
The two events that will officially make up the Nevada Invitational are the alpine slalom on Sunday and giant slalom on Tuesday. Saturday's slalom and Mondays GS will serve as the individual qualifiers, with no teams scores being tracked.
Denver is expected to have a full team of athletes competing, including redshirt sophomore
Liv Moritz, who returns to the squad after spending much of the past two months racing with the U.S. Ski Team in FIS World Cup and Europa Cup events. Moritz recorded her first career World Cup points with a 13th-place finish in slalom at Spindleruv Mlyn, Czechia, on Jan. 25, and won the Europa Cup second slalom race at Valle Aurina/Ahrntal, Italy, on Dec. 20.
This is the second round of alpine races for the collegiate teams following four days of events at Loveland Ski Area and Aspen Highlands for the Denver and Colorado Invitationals on Jan. 12-15. The Pios are in second place in each meet, 37 points off the lead in their home invite and trail by just nine points in CU's races.
The alpine-only Nevada Invitational is the fourth RMISA meet that will be actively going on. The DU and CU Invitationals wrap up with Nordic races next month on Feb. 7-8 in Frisco and Feb. 13-14 in Steamboat Springs, and the Utah Invite's alpine races are slated for Feb. 22-24 in Park City.
