
Pioneers Battle LMU in Five-Set Thriller

DENVER – The University of Denver volleyball team fell to Loyola Marymount in five sets on Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Gymnasium, dropping a 19-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-23, 13-15 decision in West Coast Conference play. The Pioneers move to 8-9 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
LEADERS
Romi Chlebecek and Alicia Thibodeau led Denver with 13 kills apiece, while Hailey Goebel added 12. Lily Van Hal recorded 34 assists to tie her career high, and Madison Winkler anchored the defense with 25 digs.Â
STRONGEST SET
Denver's strongest offensive set came in the fourth, when the Pioneers recorded 17 kills and hit .213 on 47 attempts. After dropping the first and third sets, Denver responded to force a deciding fifth frame with a 25-23 win. The Pioneers again battled in the final set, hitting .263 with eight kills, but LMU edged Denver, 15-13, to secure the match.
NOTES
- Denver finished with 59 kills, 71 digs and nine total blocks.
- The Pioneers recorded four service aces and hit .165 as a team.
- Denver forced a fifth set after winning the second and fourth frames.
UP NEXT
The Pioneers will hit the road next week for a pair of WCC matches, beginning with Portland on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. MT in Portland, Oregon. Denver will then travel to Seattle, Washington, to face Seattle on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. MT.
