Freshman qualifier Tye moves into singles round of 32; doubles duo of Jurkowska/Mavor pick up first win
PROVO, Utah – The University of Denver women's tennis team saw three of its student-athletes advance in either singles or doubles on the first day of main-draw play at the 2026 ITA Mountain Regional Championships, hosted by BYU, on Wednesday.
Freshman Frankie Tye collected her first singles main-draw win of the week – and her third overall – with a come-from-behind upset over a seeded opponent in the round of 64. In doubles, the Denver team of fifth-year Paulina Jurkowska and junior Sofia Mavor came out on top in a tiebreak to also stay alive in the main draw.
Tye, who had to qualify into the main draw, continued her winning ways with a rally from a set down over a No. 9-seeded player in UNLV's Hudson Hawkins in the first round of singles. After dropping the first set, 2-6, she leveled things at a set apiece with a 6-3 win. The third set proved competitive, though it was the Denver freshman who came out on top, 6-4.
Jurkowska/Mavor also moved successfully through a draw, capturing a win in tiebreak over Montana State's House/Stverakova in doubles. It was the second win for the two transfers – both coming in tiebreaks after they picked up another 8-7 win during the final day of the Husker Invitational to begin the 2026 fall season.
Due to weather conditions, only one round of doubles was played on Wednesday rather than the two that were planned.
Two more Pioneers played in the singles main draw but came up short in their round of 64 matches. Sophomore Yunfei Cai and Jurkowska each fell in two sets, leaving Tye as the lone Denver student-athlete remaining in the draw.
The other DU doubles team of Cai/Tye dropped its first-round match to another team from the state of Colorado in CSU's Caves/Planinsek.
The last match for DU on the day saw Mavor take on Nevada's Nikole Janickovicova in an added singles match. For the second time on Wednesday, Mavor faced a match-deciding tiebreak and again came out on top, claiming a 10-7 win.
The 2026 ITA Mountain Regional Championships continues on Thursday with the rounds of 32 and 16 in both singles and doubles tentatively on the schedule. Play is set to begin at 8 a.m. MT.
