Pioneers Move Up to No. 3 in National Rankings - University of Denver Athletics

DENVER – The University of Denver hockey team ranks No. 3 in the country in both the USCHO.com and USA Hockey media polls that were released on Monday.

Denver moved up from its ranking last week of No. 4 after the Pioneers beat then-No. 18/17 Boston College 5-2 on Friday and tied the Eagles 2-2 on Saturday on home ice.

Michigan maintained its No. 1 position on both ballots this week. All 34 USA Hockey first-place votes counted toward the Wolverines. In the USCHO.com ranking, 49-of-50 voters chose them as the country's top team; the other first-place vote went to No. 2 Wisconsin.

The top five also includes Michigan State at No. 4, Providence at No. 5 in the USCHO.com poll and Western Michigan in the fifth spot on the USA Hockey list.

The top 10 features four other NCHC teams: Western Michigan at No. 5/6, Minnesota Duluth at No. 7/7, North Dakota at No. 8/8 and Colorado College at No. 10/9. Miami and Arizona State also received votes from both sources, while St. Cloud State earned recognition from the USCHO.com.

The NCHC leads all conferences with five squads in the top 10, and its five ranked reams are second-most overall. Hockey East leads all leagues with six teams ranked, but only Providence is in the top 10 at No 5/6.

UP NEXT: The Pios begin conference play this weekend as they take on Omaha in a two-game series to wrap up their six-game homestand. Friday's game begins at 7 p.m. MT and Saturday's start time is at 6 p.m. MT. Both contests will be on NCHC.tv, and Saturday's outing will be televised regionally on Altitude 2 as well.
