DU hockey wins 4-1 to sweep weekend series
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The No. 1 Denver Pioneers hockey team scored three times in the third period to defeat the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves 4-1 on Saturday night at Sullivan Arena.
Â
DU (2-0-0) opened the 2026-27 season with a road series sweep of the UAA (0-2-0) after winning 6-2 on opening night on Friday in Alaska.
Â
Senior Sam Harris scored the game-winning goal at 4:02 of the third period before freshmen Mikey Berchild and Ryan Miller (empty net) netted their first collegiate goals later in the frame.
Â
Rookie defenseman Ryan Lin also scored his first NCAA goal as he began the contest's scoring with 46 seconds remaining in the first stanza. Lin, the No. 21 overall pick by the San Jose Sharks in the 2026 NHL Draft, buried a one-time slap shot at the left circle off passes from fellow rookies Jack Pridham and Ben MacBeath—both of whom picked up their first collegiate points on the play.
Â
Lin's tally was the first of two power-play markers on the evening, with Harris also scoring with the man advantage after redirecting Daxon Rudolph's shot from up high. Rudolph recorded two assists in the game after recording three points (1g/2a) in the season opener on Friday.
Â
The Pioneers finished 2-for-6 on the power play, which included a 58 second 5-on-3 midway through the third frame that they weren't able to capitalize. DU was perfect on the penalty kill by going 3-for-3..
Â
Junior-transfer Tyler Krivtsov made his debut in net for the Pioneers, and his first career start came against his former team, as the Santa Clarita, California, native spent the previous two seasons with
Alaska Anchorage. Krivtsov made 15 saves on 16 shots, with the only one getting past him being from Cooper Anderson that made it 1-1 at 5:40 of the second period.
Â
Denver finished with a 33-16 edge in shots on goal and a 79-32 advantage in total attempts. The Pios outshot UAA 17-5 in the first period and had 11 shots in the third while holding the Seawolves to just one on net.
Â
Alaska Anchorage goaltender Joey Rocha had 29 saves in his first game of the season.
Â
UP NEXT: The Pioneers return home next weekend to take on the U.S. National Team Development Program Under-18 team in an exhibition on Saturday at 6 p.m. MT at Magness Arena. The regular season resumes for Denver on Oct. 16-17 as the squad welcomes Michigan to its home ice in a Frozen Four rematch, which features the team raising its 2026 national championship banner on that Friday night.
